In '68 and '69? I think that's when his deferments were. I wasn't around back then, so I have to rely on those of you who are more... seasoned... for reliable info.

I got invited to leave Tennessee Tech for one semester in 67, (grade trouble) and immediately got reclassified from 2-S to 1-A (Here today and Guam tomorrow!) The only guys with a little bit of leeway on a student deferrment probably had some pretty good blackmail photos involving the head of their local draft board, or political connections WAY up high! Of course, there was the Silck Willy method- - - - -refuse a ROTC commission and run off overseas to Oxford for a year or so! The guys who are making fun of the draft system now would probably be posting from Toronto if Selective Service was still in effect today! That is, if Canada would allow 'em to run up there again. Maybe the French section!

I seem to remember former NRA president Mr. Heston getting heat for his "from My cold dead hands" statement / stance on gun control.

Back in the 60's, no one got any BS deferments. The Selective Service Bureau was an arm of the government, and pretty hard core. You had to be able to prove you were eligible for a deferment to actually get one.

Absolutely true and I can attest to this personally. My special employment deferral was checked several times by the Draft Board (I was working in a TS job just outside of Greenbelt MD). I forget the numerical category but it was the typical type for what I was doing. I got checked about every 3 months, as did everyone else where I was working.

And a slightly funny story about this... One day I got a notice that I'd been reclassified 1A and would get my call-up immediately. I took it to my boss, he laughed, said he'd check into it asap. A couple days later I got a telegram that my original classification was correct and that my 1A was an error.

Talked to my Dad about it. He said that during WW2 when he was working in a defense plant as a designer of early-technology proximity fuses for missiles, he also got a draft notice and took it to his boss, who quickly got the classification changed back.

Maybe something about our last names?

Or like Mitt Romeny who fled to France when he wasn't exercising a student deferment. Or like Newt Gingrich who spent 10 years in college (yes 10 years!) to avoid the draft.
Oh man, this is rich. Liberals who beat it outta dodge and fled to Canada, did it for ethical and honorable reasons, but conservatives who support a war of any kind, who did not serve, are just a bunch of chickenhawks.
    :vomit:
There are plenty of libs who spent 10 years or more in college to "dodge" the draft. For you, who is someone without ANY military service, to call someone else a draft dodger strikes me as grossly hypocritical. How do you know that hippies who fled to Canada to avoid the war weren't just draft-dodging cowards rather than having made some ethical decision. Your bias and hippie-liberal parental propaganda is showing through. Besides that, here is a segment from Mitt Romney's Bio. He was a student from 1967 until 1975, well after the draft was ended. This shows you are not only a blowhard, but have absolutely no idea of what you are talking about. Stop spreading lies. Oh, I forgot...liberals are ALWAYS spreading lies.
    :nono:

Born Willard Mitt Romney on March 12, 1947, in Detroit, Michigan and raised in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, Romney attended the prestigious Cranbrook School before receiving his undergraduate degree from Brigham Young University in 1971. He attended Harvard Law School and Harvard Business School and received both a law degree and an M.B.A. in 1975."

BTW I think I do have the right to criticize any politician or public figure who is ardently pro war who at the same time used their parents wealth and power or other opportunities not available to everyone else to actively avoid service during the major conflict of their time. Notice there's a difference between being a draft dodging peacnik who whans to shrink the size of our military and NOT send other peoples kids to war either (you may not like these people but at least they're not hypocrites) and being a chicken hawk who actively avoided service but celebrates sending other peoples kids off to die.

And how did you serve your country?

What we need is more name calling and finger pointing.

I'm trying really hard to imagine a situation in which I would care less about what some celebrity thinks about a given topic, but I don't think it'll happen...

What I do care about is the complete lack of objectivity displayed by our major news outlets (ALL of them) on topics such as this. Some folks are ready to run Nuge out of town on a rail for his comments due to the 'legs' this story has, but let some other celebrity suggest that the world would be a better place if "W" were no longer....well then, freedom of speech is what makes our country great isn't it?

Some folks are free-er than others, they have a license to run their mouths freely, look at all the nasty comments made by actress W. Goldberg, when has anyone ever called her to task on any of those statements she has glibly made ???

True enough, but my point was that some folks are held to one standard, while others get a pass...

I was 15 years old in 68, but a year or two so later got a draft card, was in a "Lottery" and my number range was never picked. I joined a few years later on my own. probably a good thing at that time in my life (for the Army and me:tooth:). I wasn't drafted , I was quite rebellious back in the day, but would have went.

True. However who in their right mind would take anything a complete idiot like W. Goldberg says seriously? Ditto the rest of the extreme left Hollywood "cackle".

They really need to worry about entertaining us in the manner of a court jester (what they get paid for and all they are actually suited to do after all), and not strain themselves with heady topics like politics and world events. It is unfortunate that their career path affords them a ready platform to broadcast every little thought that enters their otherwise largely vacant heads.

Uncle Ted might not have a sterling background, and lacks subtlety , but at least he is supporting the 2nd amendment when so many of his peers would have us turn into a socialist/communist living nightmare.
