Double Duty-- Carry/Range Pistol

JermanatorJermanator Posts: 16,244 Senior Member
I just met up with a young man named Mike today. He is a Marine on leave. He is my brother's girlfriend's son. Anyway, his experience with firearms have been limited to his training in the Marines and he was looking to start out with a dual purpose carry/range pistol for him and his wife to get the ball rolling. I sent him here and hope that he joins. If not, I will pass your ideas along to him.

I couldn't think of anything at the time, but Kahr makes an all steel 9mm pistol. It might fit the bill. I believe that Wambli has/had one and loved it. It is on my shorter list. What other ideas do you have?

Thanks.

Does he get to shoot a Beretta 92 in the Marines? I would think that would be a place to start, or at least something with similar controls. I would recommend a Kahr, I think, if I could ever find a couple to handle side by side.

Colt Combat Commander loaded with 185 or 200 grain bullets for the comfort of the missus. Thin grip for the gals, a thin gun overall for CCW, with enough sight radius for decent work on the range.

They did make a 9mm version for a time, but since I would have to track him down and forcibly liberate the pistol if he acquired one, I really can't recommend that choice.:jester:

I got a loaded Springfield Commander in 9mm. Find me.

    From my cold dead hands!

Here is the Kahr that I am lusting over. It is a bit pricey but it has class and is very functional....

That would do the job pretty well.

I have the Kahr (mines the K40 though), the 1911, and the 92f all of which I think would be good. I actually got the Kahr just for carry because it has no external hammer and it's slim like a 1911

    Simple answer.

    Glock or 1911

    Depending on which he prefers.

    Next question?

He mentioned that a double-stack feels too thick so that rules out a Glock and he is a jar-head so that rules out a 1911 (actually, if I get a chance I will have him check out that 9mm Commander that I have-- it might work).

Any of the Kahr steel pistols would be fine, as would a striker-fired pistol like the S&W M&P or the Gl--; the Glo--; that Austrian thing, or the S&W M&P.

Not knowing his wife's level of knowledge or interest, I hesitate to recommend a 1911.

One of the more popular aspects of the M&P series is that S&W has managed to make a double-stack pistol that feels like a single-stack. Very comfortable; in fact the Wife stole one of mine for her CCW.

Glock does make a sweet .45acp in single stack. But I don't get the jar-head ruling out the 1911, am I missing something here?

    Yeah, I woundered, also.
He must be an office pinkey.
Most Marines don't get issued a pistol, however.

No barrel bushing, no recoil spring plug, and wacky takedown = non-Commander. You are safe from me.

My recommendation would be a Glock 19/23, Smith M&P, or a Kahr. It is hard to beat any of these pistols for the price.

Maybe a Glock 36 will work. It is single stack and 45 ACP.

Glock 19 would get my vote. Easy to carry, easy and cheap to shoot, and as tough as a gun gets. I can't think of a better dual purpose range/carry gun.

Except he already said no Glocks.

He never said "No Glocks" only that they felt too thick........ perhaps the prospective handgun owner needs to prioritize and make his own decisions....

Yea, a single stack Glock might do the trick. His concern was that the double stacks felt too thick. Good suggestions everyone. Keep them coming.

When someone says a gun feels too thick, it does not mean they can't use it, as in a trigger that is so heavy, they can't pull it.....
Sometimes after much use and practice they can overcome any initial objections...

I think the only gun that fits the bill for me as a range gun and carry gun is a 1911 clone with a 4" barrel. I personally prefer striker fired guns for concealed carry, but if I could only keep one handgun for both, it would be my Springfield Loaded Champion, and I would just get used to cocked and locked.

I have two of the all steel Kahrs, and while they are great personal defense pistols, they don't fit my idea of a range gun.

Ooops, bad on me for not reading closely on the double stack issue. That said, a G19 is actually thinner in the grip than most 1911's, with normal grips. That said, I completely understand the idea of the "feel" of a gun, and if glocks don't feel good for him, I wouldnt try and get over it.

If 1911's are off limits, a Sig P225 can be found on the used market for a pretty good price...reliable, single stack, and a decent DA trigger.

To be honest I would suggest a 3" Ruger SP101 in 357. The wife can shoot 38s if the recoil from 357 loads is objectionable and she wont have issue with not being able to rack the slide.

My wife has a Kahr CW9 and can run it pretty well but she would prefer to carry my K9 only she can not rack the slide to her satisfaction. The recoil was not a problem even with 147 grain HST rounds. Still she wanted an SP101 for herself. I made the "mistake" of buying her a K9 when the first words out of her mouth when she first touched it were "I know which Kahr I am carrying" only to have her decide she can't carry it...

    Here is a 2 1/4" SP101.

Couple of K9s. The one on the right has been melted and target crowned and a bit more.

CZ-75. He can run it SA/DA, like they are trained in the Marines with the Beretta. But it will show him what the joys of C&L carry and shooting. Call it a 'gateway' gun to coming to the 1911 and C&L.

Plus, it is hyper accurate, has one of the best ergonomic setups out there, and is slim enough for CCW. he ought to at least check it out.

I'd have him look at any of the XD Compact line. My XD45 carries very well with the 10 round mag, and at night I pop in the 13 round mag that gives a full grip size. I also felt the grip on the XD was less blocky than the Glock.

My vote goes to the CZ P-07 Duty. Basically the polymer version of the CZ-75. I feel it is a bit better suited to CC, and the grip is no fatter than my 1911. $425 locally.

Have him check out the Glock and XD even though they are double stack they are still thinner than a lot of single stacks on the market. The 4th gen Glocks also have interchangeable backstraps so he might find that a comfort bonus. If neither of those work then I would say the Kahr.
