New Winchester Hog Bullets?

Diver43Diver43 Posts: 12,630 Senior Member
I saw an advertisement for a new round that Winchester is putting out.

It is made specifically for hog hunting, is lead free and comes in .223 and .308 calibers.

Is this a gimmick like the zombi bullets or truly a new hunting round?

Many people think that the .223 is too small for hogs and some ranches here in Florida allow .30 cal and larger only. Will this round exceed the current .223 rounds available for hunting and if better for a hog, why not for deer also?

Some people thing Hogs are elephants. You can kill a hog with a 17 caliber. Just shoot him in the ear. He'll go down like a stack a dominoes, like you dropped a piano on him. If Paul says this bullet will do it, I'd take his word. Anyway, go for it, cause it's all about shot placement anyway.

I read the the add, I thought they were new, but, winchester's input to the need for a copper bullet for hunters that must use them.

The zombie handgun ammo makes some sense, as it is a cheaper version of critical defence for those that
do not need nickle plated cases.

OK I get that its a better option, but if its better for hogs is it better for otner game such as deer?

Better, no; but, if you must use lead free it looks like good ammo.

    See latest G&A page 70.

Thanks Airedale. For hogs it's a no brainer. Yeah, they're tough as a boot. But a well placed shot will generally do the job. Lots of hogs are killed here in Texas with .22 centerfires of all sizes. However, I will qualify my statement and say this pertains to small Texas deer and hogs at moderate ranges. Since I'm not even a rookie with Elk, Moose, Bear, etc. I won't step out on a limb and use the same reasoning. You just have to use common sense. However, I still hear a lot of folks say they've taken elk with a .243. Not that I'm going to do it, but in my opinion, that's more proof of the importance of shot placement.

The June issue of Guns & Ammo, on page 70, has an article on this ammo ( Razorback ), and

Well, it's a lead free hunting bullet, so yeah, it's a gimmick. :deadhorse:

How so, some places you cannot use lead.

Considering some parts of California don't allow lead projectiles and also have large feral hog populations, I'm thinking they are the focus of this ammo.

That sounds correct Fishhead, because a good dose of lead is just what the doctor ordered to put a hog down on the ground. I've had good luck as my threads show here lately with Hornady and Sierra plain jane bullets. The first hog I killed last week was with a Hornady 150 grain Interlock in my 8x57 Mauser. It knocked it down DRT Bang Flop Dead!!! Then today I killed another one with a 200 grain Game King in my Remington 700 SPS 30-06. Again a Bang Flop DRT Kill. So I don't think these bullets are anymore effective than a good lead bullet. They are probably just as Fishhead said aimed at California where lead is illegal, and they are as good as can be expected without containing lead.

Snake, I envy your access to some good hog hunting. We have quit a few hogs on our lease but they are very nocturnal and rarely venture out of the deep woods. In the last few years, it's become way more work to hunt them.

Well, I checked a few places around town and was not able to find a store that carries them. I went into one LGS in Miami and the guy behind the counter gave me an open mouth stare and said, "WTH" is that? I know they are new and all, but the look he gave me said more than I can explain.

We don't ALL live in comifornia, thank God!

Frankly I fear the day "they" try to outlaw all lead hunting ammo is drawing nearer, and if most hunters are already using non leaded ammo I feel the legislation will be more easily forced onto the rest of us. That's why I refuse to drink the unleaded cool-aid.

Besides, they can't do anything a Nosler Partition can't do.

I ran in to that mentality before and was flat told I knew less than nothing about the subject; so I found the ammo on line, bought it and went back and plunked it down on the counter for them.

I don't think most of the countries hunters will be using non lead ammo until it gets cheaper than lead and is sold at Walmart and like stores.
