I suppose it's better than a sharp stick. I have know idea as to a 357 mag round for bear.

After you shoot the bear at 25 yds. or less, it will no longer be a non-disturbed bear and might become aggressive.

I was thinking about this round, as I said, It is for closer bear, Ive killed em with an arrow and we are talking about Black bear, I know how big they get, I killed a 7' 503# so I know how big they can get, this is just in case he is close and I dont wanna try and find him in a scope at 25 yards.

You could try Buffalo bore ammunition.

I have 180 grain Nosler Partition HG's on top of a dose of H110 for that situation

    I'd choose a 300 grain hard cast. Yes, I know they don't make a .357 that big- - - -go for a .44 Mag, .45 Colt, or .454 Casull.

A recent thread of mine that you might find helpful:

    http://forums.gunsandammo.com/showthread.php?5790-Gelatin-Testing-my-cast-200-grain-38-s

The point of it being that if you have a lot of mass, velocity becomes somewhat less critical to achieving adequate penetration. 180 grains is about as big as you are going to be able to find in a factory load - the reason being that some manufacturers barrels aren't able to stabilize something that heavy.

180 grain semi-wadcutters at .357 velocities would be my choice for such activities.

Sorry...I don't recommend the .357 Mag for general deer hunting much beyond bow hunting ranges and then only in experienced hands....much less something that has the possibility of chewing on you....get something that begins with a "4"...

I would personally go with a 180gr hard cast if I had to use a 357.

I used the Grizzly 180gr. WFNGC on a deer and a hog the past year and am very impressed with their performance in the field. They are also available in component form from Cast Performance Bullet Company.

Cor Bon makes/made a 200gr. Hard Cast load but I think 180gr. is the more practical upper limit in weight.

Did you end up with one hole or two? Please describe your shots and yardage. Thanks in advance.

The deer was shot through the top of the shoulders at 60 yards, the bullet exited.

The hog was shot a little far back at around 20 yards, I don't know if it exited because I didn't check at the time for a second hole.

I am good with that, I have been wanting to try my GP100 on a whitetail, I just like the results from my 300WM and am hesitant to switch. That is a pale whitetail, is it just the lighting and the camera?
