If you put one under the mattress, don't chamber a round. It might be possible to get a really disastrous kind of "unintended discharge"!

Could be, depending on how far underneath the matress you put the gun...

One thing I like about my DeSantis holster, it fits nicely over the rope carry handle most matresses have, so I need not add or require any other bedside gun holder...

That is how it is right now and there is a loaded handgun in a holster at arms reach as well.

Isn't that what is called "Premature ejection" ???? :jester:

Oh never mind !!! The under the mattress is a poor idea, too hard to get to if you need it, a barrel longer than 20 inches is a bit too long for in home use......

Yes, but depending on your partner, it may not even be needed at all.

Not ideal for quick access, especially if you have a water bed...

Not a poorly thought out plan...The only problem with keeping stuff under the bed is that you're leaving your firearm in one place a thief pretty generally always looks. That is assuming you don't lock it up when you're away from home....

Yeah, although if someone is in my house stealing stuff when I'm not home I figure ill probably lose more than a $200 Mossberg 500. That's what insurance is for though.

Only flaw with that line of thinking is that you have armed a criminal by leaving an unsecured firearm laying around the house.

I am open to suggestions though. Seems there are usually some tradeoffs between security/ hiding firearms and accessibility.

While you are away from the house, a reasonable alternative is the "poor mans gun safe"...installing an inexpensive security cabinet in a closet that has been lag bolted to the floor and to the wall studs. By putting it in a small room, you are making it more difficult for interlopers to gain the leverage on it necessary to tear it from the wall....you can also put a dead bolt on the closet door. Now all you have to do is create a the routine of locking your guns up when you leave the house.

Burglars, generally, do not want to spend a bunch of time in your home, especially if your home security system is blaring away.

Additionally, depending on where you live, you can be prosecuted for not securing your firearm and "allowing it fall into the hands of a criminal"...

An alternative to the "under the mattress" or "under the bed" scenario is a set of shaker pegs or other maskeshift gun rack inside a bedroom closet, over the door frame. Even if a thief opens the closet door, the gun is out of sight, unless he goes inside the closet, turns around, and looks up. A homeowner can access the gun easily, and it's out of sight and out of reach of curious children.

Home depot ladder hooks or bicyckle hanging hooks work great for that. Easy to install, and rubber coated to protect the gun's finish

This is why, when you are home, the gun lives next to the bed...it would only go in the closet when you are leaving for the day...

Home defense guns locked up in a safe are really hard to get a hold on FAST and that is of paramount importance!

Hence, a gun under the pillow is worth ten in the safe !! :jester:

Keep reading partner....later in the thread I point out that you should keep your guns locked up when you LEAVE THE HOUSE....gun lives in a readily accessible place when you're at home...

What ever guns I have out for home defense go back in the safe when the house is empty. I don't want to walk in to a burglary that turns into a gun fight with my guns.

As My Dad always said, if a gunfight ever breaks out, I hope you did not supply the guns..... By leaving them un-secured...........

I keep mine under the bed. I really don't see how it could be quicker or easier access under a mattress???
The only advantage I can see to under the mattress is a home invader could not get to it as easilly as under the bed, but honestly if you let a home invader get all the way to your bedside without waking up... you better hope you have hand gun protection because it is going to be a be-otch to pull out a long gun at close range like that.
