Drone Scouting

Has anybody tried or thought about this for scouting for game? Seems like a big step up from trail cams, and at only around $300 for a drone with a high-def camera, it seems kinda cheap to me.

This is not spam! You mods can delete the site I'm posting below if this is against forum rules. If you do, try googling hobby drones and look at some of the neat, affordable stuff they're coming out with.

Why not just try hunting for game instead of using technology to do your work? Why bother outwitting your chosen quarry when you can locate him with a stupid drone and walk up and murder it. I blow my nose at you silly... That really grinds my gears. Sorry.

If I read it correctly, it has a range of 50 meters. Doesn't seem worth it to me unless you just want to keep an eye on spandex clad bicyclists.

Blow your nose at me? Spandex clad bicyclists? Easy guys. Just was surfing the web and saw a new toy that got me thinking a little. And Jeff, what kind of hunting do you do that doesn't use any technology? I'm intrigued!

Listen to some of the videos, it would probably be too noisy for scouting. It can get up pretty high though. Four motors turning 4 props, not as quiet as you would think. I am now wondering if an intrinsically safe model can be made, that would be amazing on a HAZMAT call.

It would be very simple to then go to the 'next step' and use the drone to herd the animal towards the hunter.

I am always prepared to use some limited technology to assist in my hunting. Things like a range finder to ensure that the animal is within my self chosen 'kill area', better optics to ensure I can put the animal down as quick as possible, better ballistics to ensure the bullet will hit where I want it to, etc.

But the main principle of 'hunting' the chosen game by using my own two feet to seek the animal out in its natural environment and getting close enough to pit my personal skills against the animals defense mechanisms is what it is all about.

Now, having said that, I wouldnt be averse to using the drone to scope out some of the wildlife at the local beaches in summer ...............

They have a short range and only fly for 15 minutes or so for an hour charge. Not gonna be much help.

I have recently read articles about using drones/electronic aircraft to monitor wildlife. I believe it was an article from the wildlife biology department at local university but I cant seem to find it. CLICK HERE FOR A SIMILAR ARTICLE

Yeah, I was looking at the specs, and a 150 ft. range won't really get you anything that a set binos can't short of seeing the top of your quarry.

The short range is the ones controlled by a phone app. You can get ones with a RC contoller with a longer range, but it would still be less than 200 yards....

I didn't really notice the range was so limited when I first noticed these on the web. Like all products, the more you pay, the better the features and range you could probably get. For anything to be usefull to me where I live, a range of several miles would be needed. Guess I'll have to pass for now.

Sorry buddy, you asked what I thought about this and I replied,(with old Monty Python taunt). I guess I'm about as low-tech as you can get,It amazes me what people accomplished 100- 200 yr ago without any of the crap that is being foisted on hunters these days ie. scent lok trail cams blah blah blah. Don't take it personal .
