  Of the two, I would go with the one that has a full stock for Home Defense. Reason being, is that especially since you're a novice I think a pistol gripped 12 gauge would be difficult to handle and thus not very fun to practice with. Plus, you could throw a 26" or 28" barrel on the regular stocked one and have a dandy gun for bird hunting or for skeet/trap/sporting clays.

  Sorry, but a used $250.00 Remington 870 express with an 18 1/2 or 20" barrel and a mag extension will get the job done for far less money....with the advantage of having a whole world of affordable aftermarket stuff.... just sayin...

  I would go with a Remington 870. I checked out the Benelli Novas and the forearm rattled and was I generally disappointed with the quality of the gun. I will say I went in expecting something built like a Super Black Eagle. For the money go with an 870.

  Another vote for the Remington 870, I have a Benelli Nova pump that I picked up very cheaply, and it is cheaply made.
  
  The 870 is King as far as parts go.
  I like a pistol grip short barreled personal defense shotgun with a 4 round magazine, it suits Me and I am used to it.

  i just recently bought the super nova tactical i love it its easy to manuever i have also shot many of 870's tactical and non and they are also a fantastic shotgun i have always wanted a benelli and got mine for a good deal so that is why i purchased it over the 870 which was what i went looking for. either one is a good choice i would recomend by your budget. the banelli i have doesent eject as quick as i would like occasionaly when cycling at a fast pace but it could be the cheaper shells im using i have also used it for skeet the ghost ring sight on mine is taking a bit to gedt the hang of but i couldnt be happier with it especially for what i paid for it

  Yea, this. There is nothing wrong with the other two guns, but there is limited aftermarket goodies. The 870 is tried/true.

  So I have a 870 and a Pistol Grip HD Shotgun.
  
  I like the Pistol Grip caust it has the grip and sights.
