Interesting light for handguns

breamfisherbreamfisher Posts: 14,103 Senior Member
Crimson Trace is now making a small light for handguns without a rail. Oddly, the only ones listed for 1911s are listed for "Ruger, Kimber, and Smith and Wesson." Odd that. I wonder if the triggerguards are more undercut?

But it's small, reasonably high output (130 lumens) and being Crimson Trace, should be good quality. Looks small enough to where it would be easy to modify a Kydex holster like a Crossbreed or something similar to hold it. Just use a heat gun on the triggerguard area and shove in the light, assuming you have enough Kydex.

I wonder if they're going to be adding a laser light to it, eventually?

It screws and clamps on with 3 small allen screws. Not sure if that's "easily removable" enough for you.

Maybe. I think I could save my pennies and get one, then modify my IWB holster (the Chrisbreed Custom) to hold the lighted 1911.

    Or make another holster altogether.

Either way, it would be less expensive than to get an add-on rail and a light, or an adapter and light, or a new frame. Plus, it's a little more holster-friendly than a Streamlight, and for most uses, the light output seems fine.

I'm not to sure about that switch location. I wonder how easy it turns on/off ? Wouldn't want the light to come on inadvertently when you draw from holster.

Yeah, that's something to consider. I'd like to see one in person, or let it be out for a while before I bought one. Which will happen anyway, since I would need to save my shekels...

Just to clarify, the switch is a master on/off while there is a pressure switch where the grip meets trigger guard. The master switch is tiny and somewhat recessed so I can't see a scenario where drawing from a holster would deactivate it. You have to be pretty intentional about things to turn the master switch on or off.

I think he's talking about when you grip the firearm to draw, the pressure switch may be activated. That could be a negative in some situations.

You can pick them up for $149 online.

Or you can get a Streamlight TLR-1 for $100, a Capsian or Novak rail for $54 to $60, plus pay a gunsmith to drill and tap and/or silver solder it to your frame, and be out $200 easily. And you'll have something that's harder to find an IWB holster for.

No. That'll be a fun project.

Hey, you should be happy I found this light. It'll allow me to mount a light to the Colt without using a Dawson rail or some other bolt-on rail.

It looks to me that it just snaps on and the screws just hold the two halves together.

Should be a snap to put on and off.

Gotcha - It will absolutely go on with the pressure switch. With practice, you can turn it on / off on demand but I wouldn't count on that with a draw motion under pressure.

By the size I imagine it takes a CR2 battery like my XD40SC light. They are more expensive than even a 123 lithium.

They do. But considering the frequency of use and the size savings, I'd be willing to do that.

But it looks like it may be a non-starter with the switch.

A few years back, I had a brief dalliance with an Israeli light mount on my Springfield 1911. It scuffed the finish on the dustcover and left a dimple on the triggerguard. After that, if it has a rail fine, it can take a light; if not, it do not.

If I still used a 1911 for HD I would definitely consider that... I'm still considering the Crimson Trace Lightguard for my M&P.

OK, so just for the record: you like the M&P, after several years of me and Eli telling you you'd like the M&P, you *like* the M&P.

Now if we could just get Zed on board...

I think the main reason Zed doesn't like them is the trigger. Smith is supposed to start putting the Shield trigger in the new M&Ps......after that happens, you'll probably have better luck getting one in his hands.
