Worried about my step-sons taste in guns......

jbp-ohiojbp-ohio Posts: 10,928 Senior Member
He turned 18 last week and saved up money from his job to buy a pistol. We went to Fin Feather and Fur Outfitters as they have the best price/ selection around.

I was thinking XD or M&P when we got there and he had pretty much decided on the M&P when something else caught his eye.

Lets just say his saving account took a bigger hit than he was planning on............

Kimber Target II .45 Stainless............

Him shooting it for the first time. (Yes, I got on him for not putting safety glasses down, and we will work on the cup and saucer)

Kimber1.jpg?t=1343527781

I had to check it out........

Kimber.jpg?t=1343527782

Put 100 rounds thru it. No problems. Never put it on a rest, but I had four out of seven holes touching....

You had me worried with the title. I thought maybe he picked a Taurus.

    Atta boy!

    Stainless Kimbers are sure pretty.
A set of Cylinder and Slide curve checkered red/black grips, and an Ed Brown stainless chainlink MSH (flat) would be great Christmas/b-day gifts!

I'm worried if he keeps buying such $$$ guns, he'll never have enough $$$ to move out!!! :tooth:

He liked the Eclipse, but also wanted adjustable sights. They didn't have one, and he's not the patient waiting type. I told him he could always get the same finish as the Eclipse later...

Some Wilson magazines are first I think...

Outstanding pistol!!! You boy has stellar taste. He will do well in life.

Now, while you're working on your son's cup and saucer......can we work on your 'Sheriff Wilson Broken Wing' grip as well? ;-)

Yegads! What kind of job did he have prior to turning 18 that he could save up and afford a Kimber like that? Heck, I'd hafta sell all the guns I have now plus the lesser used kidney to afford one meself...

Oh, but nice pistol, all the same.

    He sucks. :tooth:

I had a blued steel Kimber Target II. Nice gun! I had to sell it to buy a house along with quite a few others. Hmmmm.

Give him a "you suck" from me too. Those are great pistols!

Very nice! I'm sure he'll enjoy owning that one. I've never had a hiccup with my Kimbers and I don't think that one will give him any problems either. Nice that you are planning to start buying good mags right away. I think that garbage mags are the weak link in any firearm's performance.

Nice gun, but i'm very curious how he purchased a gun in Ohio at age 18? His hair cut doesn't look like military or law enforcement? I'm sure you figured someone would ask?http://codes.ohio.gov/orc/2923.211

Be it the wife, kid, or sig. other, if it's to be their's, let THEM choose. Always been my opinion. Until they choose mine, I won't choose theirs. :)

None of the 3 in question would've been my choice, but so long as the young man is happy, THAT is what matters. :)

    +1

I expected to see a Judge. What we got instead was an excellent diversion and a great pistol. Very well-placed bonus funding on this gun purchase.

We used to have a professional here that posted videos on how to shoot proper, but he left and took em with... and I forgot how.

I use left eye. I have to close right. My left is just barely dominant and I see two sets of sights with both open.

Probably too many Carney jokes. Plants are sensative that way.

Your son's arms look right. Just have him shift the support hand to the side of the gun and fill in the gap on the grip. There should be 360 degree coverage around the grip. When he indexes his straight thumb (should be a straight line from the thumb nail down the wrist and along the forearm with no bend) down the side of the frame and towards the target.....you will see that it locks out the support wrist and straightens the support elbow.

The elbows should be mostly locked out and extended. NOT hyper extended! Just straight. Then, with a slight bend at the waist and a lean forward (weight balanced on the balls of the feet), stability will be gained. Basically, your body looks like a zig-zag. Shoulders over the knees.....butt over the heels.

Your wrists and elbows are locked. Your shoulders become your recoil buffers. This will reduce muzzle rise and allow for faster sight acquisition in follow up shots. Head should be straight and not craned over to one side to see the sights.

Take turns getting into this stance without a gun in your hands. Then, push on the "shooters" closed fist (where the gun would be) from the front. If this causes the "shooter" to lean/fall/or rock backwards, you don't have a stable platform. You should be able to stand there and take the push (simulated recoil) without rocking backwards or straightening up.

Best way to learn is to watch Steel Challenge or IPSC shooters run a course. Watch their body position. Everybody has their individual quirks......but the basics remain the same.

Jim Wilson is NOT a competition shooter and that dropped elbow you have is for a wounded duck.

Sorry to nitpick on how he "aquired" this gun, but it sure sounded like he "bought" the gun. You really should be careful on how you word things, since this could be construed as a straw purchase, since he apparently paid for this gun? Ohio law says you can furnish a handgun to someone 18 - 20 years old, but you can't sell it to him, and he can use it under your direct supervision, so I'm not even sure if he can legally own a handgun? People don't usually save up money so they can get a "gift"?

Yes, I agree with the Jessie Duff pictures........not sure what the rest of the thread was about. :tooth:

Seriously, tell the kid congrats on his first gun. My first was acquired the same way (I was too young to have a "job" so it was purchased through YEARS of chore tips and babysitter money......but, same same).

I paid 'some'. It is mine until he pays me back....... In three years.

Ok, but if you want, try squaring your body (hips and shoulders) to the target. You can drop your strong foot back a little if you want. Flex your knees and bend at the waist like in the pictures above. This will give you more stability and range of motion. Plus, recoil control. Just a suggestion to take as you will. I'm not a know it all. That's why I used pictures of people much better than I. Good luck and wish you all the best with your son.
