Any trappers out there?

I've used the occasional snare for rabbits and such but never got into the full on mechanical traps or any such thing. In MT you only need the $5 trappers license to do it but of course there are some rules to follow. I noticed a lot of the pelts of critters I see while deer hunting are selling for pretty nice prices considering all I need is to set a trap and go on about my deer hunting then check it again in a bit.

Any of you go that far or are snares the furthest you've taken it?

ETA: The $5 trapper tag is in addition to my "sports man" combo thing. I'd guess by itself you'd also need the conservation fee and access fee.

Used to trap a little when I was younger. Trapped a lot of bobcats when I was in school on a special study. Quality pelts come from cold climates. The colder the better. What we have down here where I am would not even be considered by the hide industry.

I used to trap when I was a teenager. I got my first car by selling fur, mostly muskrats, and raccoons. I still use a box trtap for rabbits, baited wit a chunk of apple........Robin

Another former trapper...I use to run a long line for fox back when pelts were bringing $65.00 apiece...a prime **** would go for near $40.00...I fear those days are pretty far gone. I have contemplated running a short line out here for coyotes, but it would be more for predator control than any cash realized for pelts...

Durn **** is back! Well not the same one. This one is very large and solid black. Think I may set up a spring wire snare tomorrow night and see if I can't hang him. This one is very skiddish. The other just looked at me like "what do you want??" This one hauls as soon as it hears you.

Solid black coons are unusual. In all of my work in the Deep South I've seen only isolated pockets of them in a very few places. One place is up at my old home at the foot of the Coosa Bald Mountain in north Georgia. I'm aware of one other isolated population close to Wayah Bald Mountain over on the North Carolina side. These may bring a premium with the fur buyers....maybe.

Well the fur prices listed said coons are $17-$25. Of course our buyers don't even want you to skin it just bring them the whole critter

Black coons are worthless for general fur prices. However, black, red, and albino coons are in high demand for taxidermy grade pelts.

If you trap him now (summer) nobody will want the hide. If you just want to remove a pest, get a 220 conibear and make a bucket set. You can google the image. Very simple, requires some bait, kills the animal outright, so no need for a bullet hole. This is not the best choice if you have outdoor pets.

Not tryin to sell this one just want to be rid of it and it's whole family. I had considered the conibear (and have some) but the neighbors chickens run loose so that'd be really bad. I ended up going with a leg snare just in case I get something I didn't mean to. I have no problem clubbing this **** with an axe or shooting it either way I just want it gone.

I use a live trap so I can release anything - cats dachsunds etc that wander in it, dog food works good for **** bait.

The problem with live traps and leg snares, is you WILL catch non-target animals. If there is a non target animal in the trap, the target is walking around free. If you snare a chicken, then you risk the **** killing the bird. Since you have conibears, try a bucket post set. If you have a 6' + wooden post, you can screw the bucket to the top of the post and set the coni with a trash fish. A **** will climb up the post and get caught. This makes the trap chicken and dog proof. This is the set I use for coons when they are around my house.

oh I might try that! Well the chickens take off around 7-8 so I'll wait till 9 to set the thing. The only other animal out at night is a cat and I couldn't mind snapping that things leg either.
