Fifteen years after the meltdown of civilization and they seem to be out of functioning guns and ammo already.

Anybody else find this greatly amusing?

Keep in mind that unlike many of the members on here, not a large percentage of people have a clue about reloading.

I think it is safe to say a large amount of shooters do not re-load ammo.

Or know the joys of shooting a traditional flintlock rifle.... dueling pistols.....

I thought it was the steel that sparked, not the rocks.

What sparks in a torch lighter is iron pyrites, like a cigarett lighter.

In a flintlock, the flint shaved bits off the frizzen...this is why flints need to be kept sharp and properly shaped...also this is why you find frizzens that have been re-soled, or re-faced...
the "flint" you're talking about in a torch lighter isn't the same thing...

I recall seeing fire starters that used a flintlock mechanism to light some tinder.....

I really want a traditional flintlock smoke pole...... and a brace of flintlock pistols........

BP is indeed loads of fun...

A SxS flintlock shotgun would be great too....

Kids were making it when I was in school, before you could buy it most places. It wasn't corned powder, just dust powder. Like in a firecracker.

A bag of nitrate fertilizer, a bag of charcoal briquettes, and some sulfur from the drug store, plus a little tinkering- - - - -BOOM time!

I haven't seen the show, but suspect it's a ripoff of the successful movie: "The Hunger Games," but without the budget or desire to train the hero girl with a long bow. Conceivable, a person could make a crossbow, especially a compound crossbow, but just about anyone with a pocket knife and an axe can make a longbow.

It appears to be set in a dystopian future, except not as far and a lot more dystopian in the future as in "The Hunger Games."

Of course the problem 15 years after "the collapse of civilization" is that you can't just go to the ag supply store and drug store to pick up your saltpeter and sulfur (presumably anyone could produce charcoal). You'd have to have a source for the base chemicals. No doubt someone, somewhere would have access to decent quantities of the stuff, but that would also make them very powerful and there's nothing saying they'd be willing to share the source of their power with others.

As for ammo supplies, depends how violent and crazy things get. While my own personal ammo supply may easily last me that long under normal conditions, but no telling how fast it would go shared with a larger group that had to worry about defending ourselves regularly from other groups intent on doing us harm. In terms of reloading the limiting factor is likely to be primers. Unless you've got mass quantities of primers you're going to be back to smoke poles eventually.

    My point too

Research a little Confederate history- - - - -a lot of the powder made by the south in the latter part of the war used a nitrate base made from evaporating "night water" contributed by the ladies of the big southern cities. When a rebel soldier sniffed the muzzle of his rifle, he was thinking about where the smell came from!

In all fairness Gene, The Hunger Games is a direct rip of a japanese tale called "Battle Royale" :). I've read both and liked HG better though.

As far as the show goes, IMO looks like they are trying to combine and rip off "Jericho" and "Falling Skies"

Even Captain Kirk was able to improvise black powder when he was fighting that alligator guy...

Eggs are high in sulfur. Where do you think all that SO2 comes from when you eat all them pickled eggs? :silly: :vomit:
Like Teach said, the nitrates can be obtained from urine. If you've ever mucked out a few barn stalls, you probably noticed a yellowish white powder substance low on the walls. That's nitrates from the urine of the animals that splashed on the walls and was left when the liquid dried.
Charcoal making is a no brainer.

Gunpowder can also be made from sugar, charcoal, and potassium nitrate.

I think the premise of the show is pretty much out there in La La Land. The only way to efficiently disable all the electrical devices on the planet would be a huge EMP across the whole planet. At present, that could only be caused by detonation of a huge amount of nuclear weapons in the atmosphere; that would be kind of noticeable. D/C auto generators could still be used to provide D/C current, and auto alternators could provide A/C if the diode bridge was removed. Water and wind power could be used to provide power for machinery, and steam engines aren't all that hard to make from internal combustion engines. Makes me think all those peeps were kind of stoopid.

You have GOT to be kidding Alpha...As long as you have animals, and as long as they (and you) urinate...you have the nitrates to make black powder...

:spittingcoffee: Nah, you aren't. I'm just old and cursed with an insatiable curiosity. And a good memory.

'Nother thing I just remembered. A direct injection diesel engine requires no electrical power to start or run. Just need an efficient means to crank it over to start it. Run it on corn or soybean oil. But the steam engines would be easier to build/maintain.

Diesels will also run on alcohol, and the technology to make that stuff has been around for several millenia. Of course, some of the guys I know would be glad to push the car or pull the plow- - - -just keep 'em supplied with enough moonshine!

So, if the show's premise were true....

If one had basic knowledge of firearms maintenance, building, and some handloading and bullet casting abilities, they could be well set as an important person in this post-apocalyptic landscape?
    Meh.

possibly but you forget.. if everyones "stoopid" and no macherinery is running and almost no one has a gun, any shot is going to instantly make you a target because everyone who hears it will want to kill you for what you've got. Granted that'd be pretty hard considering you've got the gun and they don't but you'll run outa ammo some time and you've gotta sleep at some point.

As for ammo supplies, depends how violent and crazy things get.

I'm figuring that the rural Midwest areas that are filled with "Shootin' Folk" would be better supplied and less likely to need to tap deeply into that supply than the urban folks would. A lot of these folks have ammo supplies for years of normal playing around - in crisis mode, they'd be set for decades.
