How often do you fully, and I mean FULLY, clean your carry gun?

By FULLY I mean taking it down as far as possible, a complete detail strip?

I try and do that to my 1911 at least once a year. Clean and relube, inspect the parts, make sure there's no grit or grime inside that'll cause an embarassing "click."

Or am I overcautious?
Meh.

Never. I pull the firing pin a couple times a year, but never remove trigger pieces. They just get blasted with cheap aerosol gun scrubber

Never driven a pin out of my Kahr or XD

On the two guns I carry most, I never have. They've had a couple rounds through them without issue.

I clean my Glock about once every 3 months, meaning a careful q-tip cleansing and such, scrubbing and then careful lube.

Once every 3 or 4 years whetber they need it or not. I will hit them with compressed air to blow the dust bunnkes out. But a standard field strip typically gets one clean enough

That. I figure with a carry gun, if it went "bang" the last time I pulled the trigger, taking it apart and reassembling it can only make the percentages go downhill.

I've found that occasionally with a 1911 and the way I carry them, I get some dust in front of the hammer.

It's kind of embarrassing to pull the trigger at the range and have a cloud of dust erupt...

As long as it goes off..you're good...

Beyond the very occasional field strip for cleaning and dusting...I don't////

Whenever I do something that gets my carry gun ABNORMALLY dirty. Might happen three or four times in a week, might be years between.

I detail stripped my 34 after Paul and I played in the gunk. I detail stripped my 26 after playing in the gunky mud in the bottom of a fish pond. I also detail my polymer framed guns after I do any grinding on them, the little polymer dust particles get EVERYWHERE!

Under normal conditions however, I doubt that I'd ever do it.

Only after it goes with me out fishing on the boat and I get some saltwater spray.

When I carried a 1911 I wiped it down every 2-3 weeks and detail cleaned it maybe once every 6 months. I have yet to clean my M&P9 at all, with about 200 rounds through it. I will probably detail clean it later this month, and not do it again for a year or two.

I never remove trigger components, etc, unless I'm planning to make a modification.
