Did he finally admit it was all a hoax?

Quite a guy, a very private person but well liked and respected within the astronaut community. Probably the best pilot among the original astronauts, which got him the pilot's job for Apollo 11.

Unlike many of the astronauts, Armstrong was not a party animal. He'd finish his work, stay late maybe, then go home to wife & kids. Unlike, oh, Wally Schirra or Gus Grissom.

Armstrong was exactly the right choice and he was as chill as an iceberg during a tight situation. During the landing, they had originally come down into a big field of boulders and had to manouver sideways to find a flat spot. Final decision point (when the fuel would run out and require their leaving without touchdown), Armstrong kept solidly on track and set down w. less than 3 seconds left. Nasa biosensors showed his pulse and respiration rate normal the whole time.

Rest in peace, Sir. You were the hero to a generation of boys who dreamed of doing what you actually did.

Surprised at the bashing of a true hero. Especially right after the man dies.

He aspired to nothing but greatness. He was an idol to every child who looked up and saw the moon as something almost close enough to reach out and touch because they knew, we knew, that he had.

He was a quiet man and maintained his honor and dignity among nay-sayers and ignorant individuals who would question his epic exploration that made him the very first to set foot on a world not our own.

    Godspeed, sir.

Rest in Peace. A true American.

Totally agree. He was one of the best, never a bad word about him, ever. Some of his astronaut pals (Grissom in particular) teased him about being so "boy scout" but it was all in fun and Armstrong had the respect of all his colleagues.

I mentioned Grissom and Schirra because I met them once at The Outpost, a famous astronaut hangout bar in Houston, just by chance. They were great guys, too. We of course lost Grissom in the Apollo 1 pad fire, along with White & Chaffee. Schirra died not long ago from heart failure. He was one of the most eloquent of the team, often was on TV coverage after he retired, wrote books on his experiences, another terrific guy. And when younger, party central along with Grissom.

    But Armstrong was the icon.

Checked the history info today. The landing craft had an entire 17 seconds of fuel remaining. Plenty of time, er... not!
