Please fill me in on 7mm-08 caliber vs .308 or anything really

Big ChiefBig Chief Posts: 32,995 Senior Member
Guy at work asked me about a 7mm08 that is on sale at Academy (?). he already has a Browning A-bolt in 7mm Mag and other rifles. I told him I know very little about the caliber and I believed it was a necked down .308 to shoot a 28 caliber projectile.

I've heard of it being a "Woman's/Youth" caliber and also heard it is great for deer sized game and and will do just about anything a .308 will with less recoil (in the same bullet weight range). I'm sure it would take. anything on 4 legs in TX.

So having zip experience with the 7mm-08, what say you?

Fine cartridge...a modern 7X57 on a short action...the only downside...maybe is ammo availability.....but in most places it's not a problem......I would not worry about using the 7-08 on just about anything in North America.............Ken

Some of the exotic game ranches in Texas have Nilgai. You might want something a bit bigger for one of those. :)

All kidding aside, everyone on here who shoots a 7mm/08 swears by it. It's parent round, the .308 Winchester, is also a great round and will handle heavier bullets.

It's not a 7mag, but it's certainly capable of taking deer sized game and a bit larger.

Designed by bench rest shooters then legitimized by Remington about 30 years ago. Very accurate, easy to reload, mild recoil, DRT deadly!! Great in a light weight rifle.

Great cartridge from what I hear, though I have not found the recoil to be much different from a .308 Winchester. I owned one for a short while and never really fell in love. More the platforms fault than the cartridge. But, either way, I've never been an admirer of the cartridge. I just prefer the bigger 7mm bullets. If I want to shoot 140 class bullets, I'll use a 6.5 caliber.

I have three 7-08's and think the chambering is a great one. My Remington 788 was in the original 18 1/2" barrel carbine version of the cartridge when it was introduced in 1980 by Remington. I also have an XP-100R in 7-08 that I competed with in the Masters @ Barry, IL. in the early 90's. My other 7-08 is a Remington 700 Camo-Synthetic rifle that I deer hunted with in Missouri in the mid-90's.

The cartridge is very user friendly and as easy to reload for as it's parent 308 Win. What's not to like?

In the past 25 years I've never been without a 7mm-08 for long. Though I've owned the 7mm-08 in several variations, It fits my niche use best in a 20" bolt gun along the lines of a Browning Micro Hunter or something similar. The most accurate one I've owned was a Tikka Lite Stainless, but I decided I didn't really like that combo as well as some of the others, which is odd because I love Tikka T3s.

If you want it, get it!
I did a lot of work from varminting to mule deer with it in the late 80's to mid-90's to around the 700 yard mark.
    Back then I was using 140 grain NBT's. Mine was in a XP-100 (14")
When I moved up to a 284 Win XP-100, I basically had the same ballistics as the 7-08 in a rifle format, and I took quite a few elk with that performance level.

My only experience with 7mm-08 was that I bought two Weatherby Vanguard (Howa) Carbines for my two sons-in-law, as gifts, to pay them back for some work they would not accept payment for. Of course, the kicker was that I had to keep them for a while to sight in the Nikon Pro Staffs I mounted on them. :tooth:

After shooting about 20 rounds apiece through them (just to be sure :tooth:), I was much impressed with both the chambering and the platform. Both shot just a hair over MOA with factory loads, recoil was soft, and it was an altogether pleasant experience. Both of the SILs are basically 100 yard shooters, as are most folks around here, and the 20" thin profile barrels are perfect for their needs. I also bought hand loading components and dies for them, but haven't gotten around to load development, since their hunting prospects dried up. But I expect to in the future, and may even acquire a rifle in 7mm-08, myself, eventually, because I like it that much.

Of course, if I already had a 7mm Magnum, I would probably just load it down to 7mm-08 velocities, and save my money, instead of buying a new rifle in 7mm-08.

I hate it when people dry up and their desire to hunt dries up too !!!! :cuss:

OK, at risk of committing Forumcide, if the .270 is a woman's gun, the 7-08 is a teenage girl's gun. But seriously, the 7-08 is a formidable cartridge for most anything in the US. The difference in the .308 and the 7-08 is: .308-.284 which .024 difference in size. for the same weight, a 7mm bullet will have a higher BC and SD than a .308 bullet. It will penetrate better and will sustain its velocity better down range, that is for the same weight bullet. However, you can get bullets in .30 cal. up to 250 grains which will also have higher BC, which make it a more versatile choice of cartridge. So which is better? I would say depends on what you want to hunt with it.

Didn't we have a thread where all you .270 guys agreed it kicked hard and and that light kicking thing was a myth? I can't say as I don't recall ever shooting one. But the guys I know who's wives hunt, that's what they bought for them. Not perpetuating a myth or a slam. Just saying what I've seen, And these women did kill deer with them.

On the 7-08, I used to hunt with a rich guy. It was his go to for white tails. A great big guy too. He had an absolutely gorgeous Browning BLR. Beautiful wood. That famous Browning blue job. Killed the heck outta deer with that rifle.

All I can say is 2 things:

    #1) It's based on the .308 Win case.....proven winner
#2) It launches those magnificently BC'ed and SD'd 7mm bullets.

    What's not to love?

The 7mm-08 has the trajectory of a 270 and the recoil of a 243. It's arguably the best pure deer cartridge on the market.

Mmmmmmm, I'm not buying the first part. The .243 in a 7-8 pound rifle recoils at approx 8-9 foot-pounds of recoil. The 7-08 in a same weight rifle runs around 12-13 on foot-pounds of recoil. Not vast, but notable.

And the second? What makes it so? Argue your point.

Been SS3's personal favorite since his 16th BD.

Actually I should let him speak for himself.

Having said that, I have witnessed the performance of this cambering several times. If I were in the market for a short action cartridge, the 7MM-08 would be on the top of the list.

I have seen the 7MM-08 described as a short action 7X57. Certainly no flies on that caliber.

The 7mm-08 is one of my absolute favorites and the one I've on everything from whitetail deer to African game. You'll hear nothing but good from me on this one.
Accuracy: because white space between bullet holes drives me insane.
