Ammo Question - Ruger SR22

Good afternoon... while I have been using guns all my life I have for the first time purchased one... a Ruger SR22. I had an issue with one of the magazines not feeding rounds properly. I called the folks at Ruger and they are replacing the magazine. In the course of the conversation the representative made a comment regarding the barrel having its rifling degraded, essentially by a build up of of lead (if using unjacketed rounds).

I was wondering if anyone had experience with the SR22 and this problem... and additionally what a good 40 grain jacket round would be.

As I am new to the forum here... thank you for providing this area and thank you in advance for your assistance.

I can't see a .22 barrel being degraded...ever. Unless you did damage to the muzzle with a cleaning rod. Sounds like they're trying to sell you a new barrel. Typically, .22s don't lead up, but they do build up a bit of wax off the bullets. This actually helps accuracy.

Thank you Gene. I had mentioned to her that I was using Remington Thunderbolts and she just tossed it out there. She told me how I might be able to clean it... just want to be sure that I am going to have that firearm last for as long as I want to shoot it.

I wouldn't clean it. You do more harm cleaning the barrel than you'll ever see any benefit from running a brush down the bore.

    welcome,

eventho youve been shooting for a long time, you need to learn some things about RFs. they are different then CF guns.

Any RF will have a preference for a particular ammo brand/type. which one is your task to find out. its the nature of the beast. doenst mean anything if you buy another SR22 either.

also, just an fyi, Rem TB have been known to leadup a barrel. again, you should do your own testing of various brands/types of ammo to see what your gun likes or doesnt.

You barrel will not be degraded steel is harder than lead. Your accuracy may be degraded with those thunderbolts

I hate them wait despise might be better.

I've never had a .22 barrel rifle or handgun lead up until I used thunderbolts

Welcome to the forum. I haven't cleaned the bore of my .22 rifle in many years.

Remington Thundercrap is nasty ammo, I had nothing but trouble with it, lots of misfires and FTF's. If you want to use bulk ammo CCI or Federal has worked best for me. You can look down the barrel and see any leading.

    Welcome aboard!

What Ruger told you could be the case.
You probably need to shoot copper washed bullets.

The same issue exists with the P-22.
I shoot Federal value pack copper washed ammo in the P-22---36 gr.

You should be able to see barrel leading, if you have it, clean it out.

Remington Thunder Bolts are the only ammo my SR22 does not like. I have not looked for barrel leading so I can not comment on that. Try a different flavor of ammo, use the defective magazine too unless you sent it back to Ruger. Thunder Bolts are the only ones that have not been %100 for cycling.

I have always recomemded to break in a 22 barrel with some quality ammo. My Beretta U22 would not cycle lead bullets. I used 100 rounds of CCI stingers to break it in. now it shoots everything I feed it.

That is my exact experience to the letter. I had never had accuracy go south on a .22 rifle or handgun due to leading until I shot a high volume (around 300 rounds) of Remington Thunderbolt ammo through my Ruger SR-22 pistol. Somehow, someway, those bullets managed to lead that thing so badly that a gun that at first produced excellent groups at 7-10 yards was suddenly printing nearly 4-5" patterns at those same distances. Upon closer inspection, I had relatively massive chunks of lead embedded on the rifling. It took a lot of elbow grease, a bronze brush and chemical de-leading agents to correct the issue.
Accuracy: because white space between bullet holes drives me insane.

Love those Stingers. CCI in general as well.
