Sights for DPMS Sportical Upper?

DanChamberlainDanChamberlain Posts: 3,395 Senior Member
I want sights for the Sportical upper. Like scopes, but want backup sights too. I'm thinking a flip up rear and gas block front. Anyone know the right combination to meet the appropriate height requirements?
It's a source of great pride for me, that when my name is googled, one finds book titles and not mug shots. Daniel C. Chamberlain

I'm running a set from Yankee Hill. It hurt to buy something that had Yankee in the name, but they do the job well. I purchased them from Cheaper Than Dirt and specified it was a gas block front sight.

Mostly it is just important to specify a gas block mounted front sight vs a rail mounted one. Shouldn't have too hard a time getting hooked up. I can take pics of mine later if that would help. My rifle is the sportical too, and despite all the jokes from Uncle Chris, it's a great shooting gun.

Wow! all the sights I have priced have been outrageously exspensive. Sheesh.

I put Pro Mag folding sights on my Stag model 3. PM138 gas block ht. front and PM137 dual aperture rear, they are aluminum and function well for me.

Not priced much higher than some polymer sights I have seen, if you can find them in-stock.

Magpul has a a great set of flip-up BUIS...actually they are BUPS as they are made of the same polymer they use for their mags....reasonably priced, great quality and they work. There are those who say the fronts should not be used on the gas block as they might melt.....however, I know several guys running them that way and have not encountered that issue in the last year of use...so unless you are planning on putting out high volumes of fire it look like they work just fine on that application

I noticed on Ebay they sell the Magpul MBUS sights for 'airsoft' guns much cheaper than you can get from MidwayUSA. I wonder if they are different? Knock-offs not made by Magpul?? Or do they get around some firearms tax by listing as 'airsoft'???

Not a tax, but ebay doesn't allow gun stuff to be sold on it. They call it air soft to be able to sell by ebays rules. Some of the stuff is knock off, but most of what you see is as advertised.

    Not necessarily.

Ebay has relaxed their position on gun accessories, they now allow the sale of just about everything other than guns. Also Magpul has their own airsoft line, both guns and gear. So their airsoft sights are marketed and labeled correctly.

Whether or not there's a difference in the manufacture/quality of their airsoft sights and their regular sights, I have no idea, but I would assume so.

I was watching Tactical TV with Larry Vickers the other day off my DVR. While he's an irritaing host, he has a lot of good points.

He was discussing iron sights and the AR platform when he was at Aimpont making his own Patrolmans Rifle Sight. He does not advocate BUIS that flip down, because he makes a good point, that if you need them and they are folded down, you could waste valuable time. Instead he advocates fixed sights in a lower 1/3 co-witness, because you can have the red dot on and be looking over the irons, or if for some reason the red dot fails, just lower your eye a bit and have your iron sights anytime.

I have this setup on my Spikes M4 patrolmans rifle with a standard front sight gas block:

    Iron sight: http://www.manventureoutpost.com/products/Global-Military-Gear-GM%252dRS1-AR15-Rear-Sight-A2-Style-Steel.html

$22.00 plus delivery. The tightening "knob" is a bit big but not ovewhelming.

Co - witness lower 1/3 Primary Arms Micro dot : $80.00

    https://www.primaryarms.com/Primary_Arms_Micro_Dot_With_Fixed_Base_p/md-07.htm

So for around $120 or less you can have a reliable lower 1/3 co witness micro dot.
