Winchester 32-20

orchidmanorchidman Posts: 8,438 Senior Member
I recall reading a thread on here a while ago about someone buying a Winchester 32-20 rifle...............I think it was Jayhawker but my memory aint what it used to be. So anyway the Tikka 7mm08.....(oops, told you what my memory was like)

Where was I.............

Winchester 32-20 Lever action.........yeah thats where I was............So I head down the road to an arms fair and see on one of the racks a 1903 Winchester 32-20 Lever action in what I would call 'good' condition for its age. Price is $550NZD or $456USD...................

Now I dont need a new (to me) rifle and I dont want a new (to me) rifle and I certainly cant afford a new (to me ) rifle, and I am in the position of possibly selling some of mine to buy some other luxury items like bread, milk, coffee, electricity etc etc ..............................but ...........................it certainly looked like it would be a good buy to start with seeing as I dont have a lever action in my cabinet.............:tooth:.

Is that a good price........? ( not that I may go back and see what his bottom dollar is..........)

Just wondering...............

Is it a model 1903, or a Model 1892 that was made in 1903? I'm no expert, but it looks like the '92 was the only 32-20 made in that time period.
The model 1903 is a semi automatic .22....
If it's a '92, it's worth considerably more than $456, in good condition.

According to my reference books the M-1892 was made between 1892 - 1932 If it is a "sporting rifle" its value is
    excel v.g. good fair poor
    $5000. 3500. 1250. 700. 350.
If its a carbine its worth a little less, the fancy sporting rifle and trappers carbine much more, the fancy had a pistol grip stock and checkering
    hope this helps JAY

Did you ever see the American Movie, Animal House with John Belushi, Tim Matheson, and Steven Furst (Flounder) to name a few? There's one scene where one of their fraternity brothers named Pinto (Tom Hulce) is with a young 13 year old girl (That looks 18) that passed out from too much to drink, and he's debating with himself on whether to have his way with her while she's out. There's a devil sitting on one of his shoulders and an angel on his other and the angel is telling him that he needs to do the right thing and take her home to her parents, while the Devil is telling him to go ahead and have his way with her. Well, I'm (as The Devil) on one shoulder and your conscience (an Angel) on the other, but I'm saying, Hell with it dude, Buy it, buy it. You can do it!!! Just think how much fun it will be!!! While your conscience is on the other shoulder telling you "No No, you can't afford it, don't do it! You'll be sorry!!!" And I'm saying "Aw, don't listen to him, he's a kill joy, go for the gold man, buy it buy it buy it!!!

Alec, that's the book value of the rifle but I've found that prices of certain types of firearms vary quite a bit from state to state. I've found the prices at gunbroker.com to be pretty close to what anyone can get for a gun in most places and I suspect people may be using that site to base their asking price. On gunbroker I found about a dozen of those things for sale and the ones around that vintage ranged from 1100.00 to 3000.00.

Sounds like you may have to go without milk in your tea for awhile and buy it Alec.

No problems buddy...I have scads of .32-20 brass....

and just for the record, I'm looking for a Colt Bisley Model (or clone) in .32-20 that is affordable....but I wouldn't turn down a Winchester lever gun in the same chambering...both would be better,,,
