Hunting hogs, question

DoctorWhoDoctorWho Posts: 9,496 Senior Member
I will be soon moving and there are lots of hogs, these hogs start off as domestic farm hogs, and escape into the wild areas, tropics, and I will be able to hunt them, I was thinking of a dedicated hog rifle, My VZ-24, it is currently an 8mm, I was thinking of re-barreling it to .308 NATO, as it will be available to Me there as opposed to 8mm, or is a pistol caliber like .45 acp a better idea ?? another round that will be available to Me there... I will need to stick to calibers I can pull off the shelf at a supply depot, not a gun store.....

You really shouldn't shoot other people's hogs.

Also, taking ammunition from supply stores shelves is illegal. You should purchase your own.

My first thought was 7.62x39 if they have it. Darned adequate for hogs up to 150 lbs or so, and cheap. An SKS makes a great field gun for brush, open sights up to 100 yards with the right setup.

If you go bolt, .308 or .30-06 are going to be common and less expensive.

    IMHO

Let's not be a clown, I will be authorized to requisition /draw ammo, and the hogs will be harvested and shared with the farm owners permission.....

I have to stick with Military calibers in common use...

Most hunting is done in and around farms and sugar cane fields rice patties and unincorporated areas, We first obtain permission from the land owners and abide by their rules.... We also share the meat with the owners....

I'm no hog expert but I hate to see you ditch a perfectly good 8mm barrel. I've never hunted in the tropics but I have seen a lot of Tarzan movies. So it occurs to me you'd be hunting in the thick stuff. If .308 will be readily available to you, you might consider maybe an AR platform and a red dot.
    Just my opinion.

Actually the hogs run along trails on the sides of hills, you chose a vantage point a bit higher up on the side of a hill in view of a trail, and pick one off as they run by......\

I want to take My VZ-24 along, but I also want it to be in top condition before I go....

If you go .308, I am not sure that the VZ-24 action is up for it. That's definately a teach question.

Also do not overlook .22 WMR. Lots of hogs have been taken with ear shots.

If they allow you a silencer, and you have the coin, it would be hard not to consider a subsonic .308 with heavy bullets and a can.

If it were me I'd still be looking at an AR type. Another group might come running along YOUR trail. A 400 lb tusker can do some real damage so a full mag for quick follow ups would suit me better. Again, just my opinion.

By the way, what does one call a group of hogs?
    Herd?
    Pack?
    Gaggle? (Naw, that ain't right)
Is it different if they're domestic as opposed to feral?

A group of hogs is called a drift, parcel, drove, or herd.
Where they cause problems they are called a bunch of &$%#*^% varmints. :tooth:

7.62x39mm Soft Points. For hogs if eradication is the name of the game, that is your 1st string quarterback.

For a bolt gun, just get a CZ 527 Carbine and top it with a 1-4x scope. Done.

Or, buy a Mini-30, scope it with the same. Done.

Teach tells Me the VZ-24 action is suitable for .308, but not .30-06 because that requires lots more more work on the magazine etc.. as it is a medium length action...

I doubt the .22 WMR is available there...

I really want, for now anyway, to use what I have on hand, and later on, I can either requisition or acquire other stuff.....

7.62x39 or .223. Pick your shots and know the anatomy, and you will do fine.

    Neck shot:

The neck is 'lower' than most expect. that means you could poke a hole through just meat above the spine, and the pig could get up and take off.

    Anatomy:

Because of the high spine ridge, people also hit high on a heart shot and poke a hole through the lungs. Or they aim BEHIND the elbow and gut shoot it.

This is why most people believe pigs are armor plated. Because pigs are hit wrong and survive the shot.

I have one of those, and it is handy as heck in dense brush. This is the last little axis spike buck I shot with it:

I know 5.56 Nato is available in the armories there and I can requisition it, I don't know if 7.62x39 is, I would have to ask, however I want to use what I have and fix up what I need to fix before I leave...

When you get there, and if you need any help, I am in Miami and the closest US flight you can get. I will be glad to meet with you and help you in any way that I can. If on your way there you stop here and get a few days I would enjoy meeting you and showing you around, if the wife and kid can give me the time away from the house.

Man, my 8x57 kills hogs fine. In fact there's not a hell of a lot of difference in an 8x57 and a 308. And, you can get ammo for it from places like Midway. I would leave it as an 8x57.

Never mind, I had to reread what you wrote at the top. Well, the action will handle 308 just fine since the 8x57 and the .308 are very similar.

If the VZ is what I believe it to be, it is like a 24-47 Yugo, which is more than adequate for any of the modern cartridges around such as .308, 7mm-08, .358 Win. . 6mm Remington, .257 Roberts and its improved version, etc. It's limitations on the 06 cartridge aren't about strength, but size. However, as Teach says, the magazine can be modified to handle the longer 06 Cartridges. Like he said, it's a medium lengtht action. The 7x57, 8x57 are what it was made for originally. I have one in .257 Bob AI and one is still in 8mm x57, however it is sporterized. It makes a great Deer hog rifle or about anything in North America with the right bullet and good shot placement.
