Interesting squirrel hunt.

This AM I went to the National Forest out behind the neighborhood.
It is a marginal area that can have a few squirrels and was the spot
that I shot the white squirrel some years back.

I did not shoot one in there, but, saw one and tried to move in on
it and got cut off by some flooded land along a creek branch.
I then tried to get out of the spot by walking along the trunk
of a blown down tree and as I got to the small branches that
would have been the top of the tree, I noticed something not right.

So there I was with one foot in the air with a cold moccasin coiled
up just about where I wanted to put my foot. The snake would not
leave and decided to show me it's cotton mouth and fangs.

Needless to say, I did not put my foot there and backed up and
sat down on the log and the snake just held it's perch in the branches.

It's funn you bring up such a story, Ned. I spent my whole time in the mountains this past week highly concerned about just such an encounter with a buzzbutt because of the unseasonably warm weather. Not the kind of thing I'd want to deal with miles from a real hospital and I'm glad you got away unscathed.

Interesting mount Ned. We have a few areas here that are known for black ones. And those cotton mouths are by far the most aggressive breed I've ever encountered.

A cottonmouth is very easy to control. All you need is a J.P.Sauer 16ga SXS and a Rat Terrier to help you:wink:

Yeah, I remember that issue; but, the dog would scare me to death.

I had one of those crawl out from between my feet
    once.

After 20 years of hunting in California and more than a few encounters with rattlers, it is comforting to know that there are no vemonous snakes up here.

    You didn't kill it?
The question isn't who is going to let me; it's who is going to stop me.

I hate snakes. All snakes. But cottonmouths worst of all. After living in Louisiana for forty years, I assure you I left a wide and deep swath of dead cottonmouths in my wake. And I don't apologize for it.

I have never seen one...but I still want to see a pic of a dead one. And another dead one....Just because.

If I knew how to post photos I would show you a typical dead Cottonmouth, but I don't have the know-how. Maybe Teach will throw one of the photos back up of the one my Rat Terrier and I got out from underneath the house
