My kids say that all my stories about growing up in S Texas are about stickers, snakes, and/or bugs. I smile and say,"Yup"
I lived outside of Fort Worth for a little over seven years and I used to tell my friends that everything in that state either bites, pinches, sticks, or stings.
Central Texas Whitetail season starts on Saturday morning at 30 minutes before sun-up. The woods will sound like a war zone as the lights starts to filter through the cedars... and the stupid ones get darwined out of the gene pool.
I am so mentally ready to go hunting, but not ready at all with the equipment.

Can you tell me about where you were with this snake? You're in the western Florida Panhandle, aren't you?
I live in Fort Walton Beach but the snake was shot at our hunting camp. The camp is in Alabama between Brantley and Dozier on Leon Tower road and the property has the Patsaliga river bisect it.
Right on the very southern edge of the range! I've seen 'em in your area, but you won't find timber rattlers in Florida except in a couple of isolated pockets, and not many here. Eastern Diamondbacks? Yep, we've got 'em, but in all honesty these are no significant danger to anyone in the woods. Yellowjackets are a hellova lot more dangerous than snakes....even Cottonmouths. Few will agree with me on this, but fewer yet have worked in the woods all their life as I have

That pretty much sums up the whole of South Texas Dr.db, all the way up the coast to at least Galveston. All that salt grass and brush is a perfect home to rabbits and rats, which happen to be a rattlesnake's favorite grub. I have to watch my every step down here in the wild. Just when you start getting complacent, you'll come upon one in a place you weren't expecting it. It will make it necessary for a drawer change.
Teach speaks volumes of truth about those chaps or some form of snake leggings. They are worth their weight in gold. Where I'm hunting this year is Rattlesnake City. Some of the biggest Western Diamond Backs ever killed come from that area on the East side of Lavaca and Matagorda Bay around Point Comfort-Olivia- and LaWard.
