Disney to make new 'Star Wars' films after buying Lucasfilm for $4.05 billion

Oct. 30, 2012, 5:48 PM EST

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- A decade after George Lucas said "Star Wars" was finished on the big screen, a new trilogy is destined for theaters, since The Walt Disney Co. announced Tuesday that it was buying Lucasfilm Ltd. for $4.05 billion.

The seventh movie, with a working title of "Episode 7," is set for release in 2015. Episodes 8 and 9 will follow. The new trilogy will carry the story of Luke Skywalker, Han Solo and Princess Leia beyond "Return of the Jedi," the third film released and the sixth in the saga. After that, Disney plans a new "Star Wars" movie every two or three years. Lucas will serve as the creative consultant for the new movies.

Bah I was done with Star Wars when the Ewoks showed up. While I like the muppets, I don't want them in my Sci-fi.

And to prove it, Episode One made me fall asleep. Nope, not seeing it.

The basic Star Wars story is sound. It's all the things Lucas threw in for the kiddies (to sell toys) that were crap...

Unless they go the "Empire Strikes Back" way, I see a CGI PC crap coming.

Where can the story go from where it ended in Episode 6? Let's see, Princess Leia and Han get married and she makes him an honest man; 2.3 kids, two speeders in the garage, and Han becomes a stellar shipping magnate. Luke becomes the new Jedi master and opens a school to teach new ones the ways of the Force. Politics in the galaxy slowly reverts to what it was before, and degenerates into chaos. A new Sith Lord rises, and the whole cycle starts over again. The twist on the new Sith Lord is that it will be Princess Leia as she now controls the Senate. She has all the powers of the new Jedi, but none of the discipline, and is turned to the dark side, and becomes the most powerful Sith Lord yet. Dull, dull, and more dull.

I am a big fan of the Star Wars story. There is a huge collection of books that follow and spin off from the movies though in the past few years authors are running out of ideas and they story lines are getting bizzare. The last book I could not even finish it was so far fetched. However the early books are very good.

Actually if you read the books that almost is totally accurate! lol

Don't they still owe us 3 movies that occur in previous time? I'll wait to see them first to form an opinion, they could suck big time or be awesome.

Well, seeing as everything that came after Empire was pretty Mickey Mouse, this seems like a good match.

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away..........we entertained your socks off with good guys...bad guys... laser sword fights, lot's of gratuitous shooting, arial/space battles that made Top Gun drool with envy....and had a master-mind composer and soundtrack that you can still hum to this day.....especially when the MIL comes over and you retreat to the man-cave with the Imperial Death March in your mind.

Now we're here again to stroke you and your wallet over with some stupidly thought out CGI effects and a poor story line.....enjoy the show!

I found the first Star Wars movie very entertaining but lost interest quickly afterward. I thought it got a bit silly.

If I'm still alive whenever it comes to cable , or whatever we are watching by then , I'll give it a go. No way I'll EVER go and pay to see ANYTHING in a movie theatre EVER again.

It takes a really good movie to get me to the theater these days. Thankfully there's a very well managed multi complex not far from my house, with clean theaters, bright screens, good audio, ranked seating, plenty of parking. Girlfriend and I always go to a fairly early screening (noon, 1pm) and the customers are most always those who REALLY want to see the movie, and are therefore polite and quiet. Amazing that this clean, well-run movie complex is still going strong, and compared to the junk theaters we usually see, it's a rare thing. Otherwise, if this theater weren't so professional and comfy, I'd do the same as you and not go to theaters again. Sometimes, though, it's worth it.

IMO there's nothing like the big screen for a top quality movie. It's just that top movies aren't around that much these days. Other times, cable TV is just fine. Star Wars #4303? Zzzzz.

And when I talk about the top movies, I'm talking about those rare events... Apocalypse Now, Chinatown, Blade Runner, Alien, etc.

I'm kinda thinking that the upcoming Spielberg "Lincoln" might be one of those.
