Handgun scope for Kel-tec .223 pistol

twatwa Posts: 2,245 Senior Member
I am planning on mounting a scope onto my PLR .223 pistol. Was looking at the Simmone Pro hunter 2-6 x 32 or 4x32, anyone have any experience with these? Not wanting to spend a ton of money, just something fairly accurate and rugged. Any other suggestions in the $100 to $150 range?

Not bad but not great. Questionable how they would hold the recall of that pistol. I own one and they like to jump and kick and fuss alot. theyre pretty mean things
look at this one for $180

I use a Simmons 4x32 Prohunter on a semi-auto .22 mag......but that's not near the blast the PLR puts out.

Why a scope on a firearm not designed for precision shooting now a red dot of some kind yes its more of a tactical/fun application, my 2cnts

As Cappy54 suggested, you might be better served with some type of red dot on that type of pistol as a handgun scope doesn't lend itself to quick target aquisition. It's like trying to sight something through a soda straw. If you really have to have a scope, I have a Weaver 2.5x8 on a .454casull and it's held up well so far and that thing is pretty punishing on scopes. I believe it was a little over 200 bucks from Optics Planet.

How do you plan to shoot your Kel-Tec with your new optic? Standing, sitting, prone, or even all of the above? Normal distances?
AS already mentioned if you are going to be doing most of your shooting off-hand, then a dot sight may be what you want.

I've got the same gun with a reflex red dot sight and don't really like it - tough to quickly pick up sight alignment. Pretty sure I'm going to remove the reflex sight and just go with the open sights on it.

I have a red dot on it now. Missouri has an "alternative method" deer season that opens toward the end of december where you can use handguns and I have a tag yet to fill. The .223 is a legal caliber to hunt with so I thought this would be a fun way to end my season. I would be using it from a bench type setting (deer house) and shooting out to 50 yards or a little more depending on how she acts at the range after I get one mounted. After a couple days with no posts about it, I went ahead and ordered the Simmons, hopefully it will work out OK. If not I have a few other guns I can try it on. Thanks for the input.

Never hunted myself but still a 223 handgun in that configuration does not feel like the right gun to go after deer.
If this post is non welcomed, I can always give you a recipe for making "tostones".

What is the right handgun to go after deer? I made a terrible shot with a .44 magnum a few years ago on a small doe late in the season, had to track it all over the property and make a finishing shot. (that one still bothers me a bit) Obviously the state of Missouri feels the .223 is an adequate caliber. it is all in shot placement, put it in the right spot, and all will be fine. Do you feel the caliber isn't sufficient or the way the gun looks?

One thing to be aware of is that with such a short barrel you muzzle velocity is going to be noticeably slower than even a carbine length barrel.
So, 100 yards shot will be like a lot further shot in terms of impact velocity compared to a 16" AR-15

One thing I can tell ya 'bout the Sim. 4x32, you really have to hold out at arms length to get a sight picture. Like fishheadgib said....it's like sighting through a soda straw.

Your right Ernie, my thinking was 50 to 60 yards would be the MAX range I would want to shoot. It all depends on how things go at the range once I get it mounted, I may find it won't fill the bill, and just hunt with muzzleloader. That being said I feel the .223 round out of that gun would be sufficient at 50 plus yards if you placed a good shot. Funny thing, when I bought the gun, Kel-tec touts it right on their box as a "long range pistol". How long range has yet to be determined, at least for me. Should be interesting I think.

    Looks, who cares?

Is 223 a reliable round for a "humane" kill on a deer? I think it is marginally so, deer can be tough, adding a very short barrel to the equation is my main problem here. My brother has the PRL-16, it jams all the time, hell of a thing if it does so when you need a second shot to stop an animal from suffering.

There are many definitions of "Long Range."

Your "brothers" might jam all the time, but mine does not, it is a pretty reliable gun actually. Like I said in an earlier post, a lot will be determined at the gun range before it even makes it to the field. I have a wait and see attitude.

223 is more than adequate for deer assuming proper shot placement even fired from a short barrel. If the shooter considers proper shot placement somewhere in the body mass, they should worry more about their marksmanship skills and less about cartridge selection as any cartridge will result in a mess.

Having said that, I I haven't found the right optic to make my PLR16 something I would go hunting with. It's certainly a fun range gun but not a hunter.

Finally got to take my scoped PLR to the range I have been meaning to post a report. Going to have to disagree with a few here, it has been a while since I have shot it, it definately doesn't "jump" or "fuss", as some suggested, just as I remembered it was very pleasant to shoot with very mild recoil, it is darned LOUD though with the installed muzzle break! (I got more than a few questions about it at the range) Also, have to say it is more than adequate as a hunting gun, quite a bit more accurate than I thought. I am definitely not an expert marksman, and have a feeling this gun can do a lot more that I can. 50 yards, I was darn near shooting the same hole, 75 yards shooting about an 1 1/2", when I got out to 100 I was at about a 4" group. I know the limitations of this gun, my original thought was around 50 yards, I am now more than comfortable taking a shot out to 75 yards. Now all I have to do is get a nice buck in my sights this weekend. If I am successful I will let you know!

Will your hunting rest set-up be as steady as your range set up was?
Or was your shooting done with a field rest?

Exactly the same, I am hunting out of an elevated "deer House" - sand bag rests out of all 3 windows. Turnip field and the deer are pouring in, just have to wait for the right one.

I went with a Bushnell holo sight on mine, it works really well. I would feel comfortable taking shots with it at 75 yards on deer sized game if I was so inclined to hunt with .223.
I have killed several pigs with mine so I know it will do the job but .223 is not my favorite caliber.
