Hi all.

I won't talk about my guns yet as
1) I have the pics on my phone and can't post em from here
2) I am outta cash :-)

I plan on taking up Trap this spring but will take that to a different forum but have a few pistols and a deer shotgun which with a 30" full choke barrel doesn't make a good defense gun for the home. I live in the restricted state of MA though after the goings on in NY doesn't seem so bad.

I read with interest the posting on self defense training and will have to see if we can try that out at the club.

I am thinking of getting a Remington 1187 for trap and also for the home.

Anyway, after several days of reading very informative posts here while a foot injury healed I figured I would post today. Thanks for all the great information.

Hmmmm- - - - -an 1187 for trap- - - - -are you interntionally giving yourself a handicap to make the sport more challenging? Most trap guns are dedicated-purpose single-shot guns with really weird-looking tapered ribs.

I got my Rem. 11-87 in its introductory year of 1987. Mine came with a 26" barrel and multiple chokes (2 3/4"-3" shells). Next, I got a Hastings rifled barrel with integral scope mount for deer hunting here in Illinois. I also acquired a 30" factory barrel for it that is roll-marked 2 3/4" Target and is intended for trap shooting. With those 3 barrels, I shot trap, skeet, 3-gun IPSC matches and hunted everything from deer and coyotes to geese, ducks, and rabbits & quail. It is truly a most versatile combination and I highly recommend it.

Get well soon & welcome to the group.

Jerry, I shot trap for two years with an 870 Wingmaster. If it flies, it dies!

I shoot trap with both a 870 Wingmaster and a 11-87 Primier. The 11-87 has a softer recoil but I go with the 870 most of the time nowadays. I just shoot 5-10 rounds per year now so I have never had the urge to buy a dedicated trap gun.

Thanks for the welcome guys. Another couple of days and I can get back on my feet. Bored doesn't begin to describe it.

I have my dads Winchester model 12 w/30" full choke barrel (1944 build) which I need to get checked out before I fire it. My understanding is that the full choke isn't right for a beginner. Also, my GF wants to shoot too so that was why one of the club members suggested the 1187.

I figured the 1187 could double for home defense.

If I get proficient and seriously hooked on trap I may consider a dedicated trap gun.

Cleaning out moms house also netted my childhood (and presumably my dads as well) 1934 Savage model 3b .22. Once the mud dries a bit I would like to shoot it too for old times sake.

If you're going to be shooting trap, a full choke is exactly what you want....the Model 12 you're describing sounds like a great interim trap gun...

Good luck on trap shooting, when I "tried" it...I ended up shooting 3 nights a week at three different clubs for about 4 years before I finally realized how much money I had sunk into breaking little clay disks...but then I DID have a lot of fun in the process...

Whet he said. There is no "trying" trap. That's like saying you want to just "try" heroin.

Trap is just the gateway drug, then you move on to the sporting clays addiction.
