More on Fast & Furious.

PFDPFD Posts: 1,903 Senior Member
Some time ago I wrote AZ Rep Paul Gosar asking him to hold the ATF's feet to the fire on this Fast & Furious thing.

Today the news reported that the acting director was demoted along with some other shake ups.

I also received this from Rep Gosar:

"Congressman Gosar Demands Answers on "Operation Fast and Furious"

I am proud to be the only Arizona Congressman who serves on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, which has oversight authority over virtually everything the federal government does. Its business is to proactively investigate and expose waste, fraud, and abuse in government.

This summer, the committee has been engaged in exposing grossly irresponsible actions by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, commonly referred to as ATF, right here in Arizona, through Operation Fast and Furious. The operation permitted the exchange and transportation of firearms into Mexico and into the hands of felons and drug cartels. Congressional investigations have found that the ATF's incompetence in this matter has put the lives of Arizonans at risk for the foreseeable future, especially since these guns have already been found at numerous crime scenes across the Southwest and beyond.

During committee hearings, I have questioned the Obama Administration's DOJ on what they knew, how much they knew, and when they knew it. There have been multiple hearings by the committee on this subject to date, and I have been actively pursuing the answer to the tough questions. At the hearings, I heard testimony from law enforcement that they were compelled to participate in an operation which they knew was likely to result in the unnecessary loss of life. I also heard from the grieving family that lost Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry who was killed by a Mexican drug smuggler armed with one of the very weapons used in the seamless operation.

I will continue to use my role on the Oversight Committee to demand answers and accountability for this grossly-mismanaged and dangerous operation. While I applaud the August 30th demotion of ATF Acting Director Ken Melson, as well as the resignation of Assistant U.S. Attorney Dennis Burke, I still demand to know who ultimately authorized this operation at the expense of further violence and danger on our Southwest border. I firmly believe the authorization of this operation came from the top tier of the Obama Administration—with consent from Attorney General Eric Holder or another official at his level of authority—and I intend to pursue any and all individuals involved and hold them accountable for their actions and inactions.

I like his position.
That's all I got.

Paul

I've also received a positive response from my representative. He says the BATFE has been stonewalling their investigation, but they're not giving up.

FYI, BATFE's temporary head has been reassigned, Arizona's US attorney has resigned, and another prosecutor has been reassigned...

I like the term "demotion" even better. "Brought up on charges" would have been even more better.

Sorry, I missed what you had put in there originally.

No agency head is ever "reassigned" unless he's done something really bad. It's viewed as an "opportunity to try and expand your horizons." In other words, they're gonna let you stay elsewhere until they decide if they want to let you resign or take your pension.

Don't they reassign Agency heads after a change from a Republican to a Democrat ?
    Example: Director of the FBI
Example: NYC when there is a newly elected Mayor (Republican to Democrat) with appointed positions like Police Commissioner, FDNY Commisioner etc....

That too. But Melson was put into place during the current administration.

Let's hope the poo splatters all the way to the White House, or at least to Holder. Not much hope for it to get to Obama, but it's a nice thought!

Typical government response in the ranks of the higher pay grade. Commit criminal negligence, get someone killed and get "reassigned"...at least the USA was man enough to resign. Both the others need to be "reassigned" to a fire base in Afghanistan...

I've seen recent interviews with congressman Issa (R-CA) and one of the congressmen from Utah. They both speak well of Melson, and say he has been very cooperative. It's the higher ups in the justice department who are refusing to cooperate. They are providing pages and pages of totally blacked out documents that can't be read.

The DOJ is covering something up. I hope that congress gets to the bottom of it.

Where is Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein when you need them? Look what happened to Nixon. The media should do their job and investigate those at the Top that are covering up or blocking the investigation. Scooter Libby got a Federal conviction for lying to Federal Investigators so why not those that are lying or blocking requests from the Congressional Committee for data that the Justice Dept. is refusing to provide?

If they could take Nixon down why not Obama? Anyone that believes Obama did not know what was happening is naive at best, if not incompetent for poor management.

Apparently some in congress feel the same way. I hope they get to it.
