.40 ammo cost vs .45

I am getting ready to purchase another pistol, but haven't decided if I want to get a .40 cal, or get a .45 cal. I have compared the cost of the two pistols I am looking at (S&W M&P), and the cost difference for the pistol itself is less than $30. However, I am more concerned about the difference in cost of the ammo. Knowing that ammo prices are considerably higher right now, I am more interested in comparing prices as they were before the big run on ammo , hoping that they will be getting back there soon.

Price comparison is for standard target ammo only. Thanks.

45 acp will always be more common and can be bought cheap at gun shows, reloads. Good practice ammo.

couple of bucks more per box of like ammo. example Federal American Eagle 24.99 40 S&W 27.99 45 ACP at my store

I think it depends on the pistol, some designs are too snappy with the .40S&W.

Whatever the cost of ammo, the cost to your character for not owning a .45 is far higher.:jester:

For my second pistol I went with .45. Here where I live .45 ammo has been a lot easier to find than the other more common calibers (.380, 9mm, and .40) and I have been paying on average about $30 a box of 50. Six months ago the same box was about $22. On the few occasions that I've actually seen .40 available from the suppliers that I buy from, the cost per box of 50 for .40 has been only a couple bucks less.

Sorry about the double post. Most forums tend to have different people looking in one or the other, not both. I haven't been able to make up my mind one which I prefer. I have an offer out on a friends Glock 23 (.40 cal) that he is wanting to sell, but haven't heard back from him yet. I also know that our local Leo's use S&W, M&P in .40 cal. I shot a Springfield XD in .45 yesterday, but still haven't made up my mind. Still in the research phase now unless the Glock deal comes through, then I may get a .45 next year when I have more funds available.

I thought a lot about that before I bought my first .45acp-chambered sidearm. Eventually, it came down to bigger bullets make (however slightly) bigger holes. I haven't regretted the choice.

WalMart hasn't jacked up their prices. I've bought both .40 and .45 in 100rd. Winchester white box FMJ's. $35.77 for the .40s and $40.70 for the .45s.
