FInally, a Cop Who Can Shoot Pretty Well!

Cop mugged off duty. One dead, two hospitalized. Of course, all the questions are being directed at the actions of the "Victim" as opposed to the feral citizens who tried to mug him at night.

Well done by the officer, although I dispute your use of the word "finally." Might I direct you to Jim Cirillo and Bill Allard, two veterans of the NYPD stakeout squad who knew how to shoot? Of course they were a different generation of men...

Another one for the good guys.

Indeed. A abdominal, butt, and neck wounds? A happy outcome to be sure, but we can do better.

Ok..........how can two of the suspected robbers be charged with murder (as per the reported story) if they didn't kill anybody?

It's a charging option a lot of DA's have- - - - -in any situation where someone dies, even a fellow scumbag dropped by the cops or a citizen, anyone who participates in the crime can be charged with murder. It's plea-bargained down to a lesser charge in a lot of cases, but it gives the prosecutor some pretty good ammo against the accomplices in a crime such as this.

In the course of their conspiracy to commit a crime, someone died as a result of their criminal activity. It doesn't matter who. The off duty deputy just helped things along.

Still, the news media is asking all sorts of questions attempting to find some culpability against the cop since the "feral" citizens harmed were men who could have been President Obama's sons.

It's all good- - - - -a parasite on society achieves room temperature, the good guy survives without injury, and a message is sent to the other scumbags that being a predator could be hazardous to their health. The only downside is a 33% success rate- - - -two of the jerks are still wasting oxygen!

Good shooting no matter how you look at it. The shots to the buttocks could be construed as an attempted brain shot.

Actually we have quite a few cops around here that can shoot. There's even a friendly rivalry between Highway Patrol, Sheriff, and City Cops here. Some in each department put in the time of and beyond that needed for qualification and these dudes can shoot. Some even belong to our gun club and compete in our informal shoots and sometimes Kick Butt!!! Not all, but some. Some couldn't hit the broad side of a barn from the inside. But that's the same way for regular club members. To some of the cops it's only a job and they don't get off on recreational shooting, so all they do is worry about being good enough to qualify for the sake of their job.

Houston area cops are generally pro-gun and they tend to shoot a lot, especially the younger ones (many of whom are Iraq or Afghan vets). Range where I shoot, lots of sheriff deputies and such are hanging out there (the range is owned by some ex-LEOs) and they're always shooting and talking guns.

Texas highway patrol? You do not want to face those guys down.

In Texas, LEOs are allowed to choose their own sidearms and most go for .40 or 45. I see Houston cops carrying large frame Glocks and also single-action 1911-style pistols. And our Houston cops also seem to do quite well in shoots against baddies.

This general sort of pro-gun, active shooter and regular practice LEO is pretty typical here, not at all like the rust-belt city cop who only shoots once a year when needing to qualify.

    After all, this is Texas.

yeah I agree Sam that the Texas Hiway Patrol boys are also great shots usually. So are the game wardens. I didn't mention them in my post above, but both those state guys shoot at our range and some rule the roost.

A couple months ago we had a long distance chase that was on the TV via news copters. This guy in a big van had refused to stop and was pursued by Houston cops all through the freeways, then he headed out of town on I-10 west.

Due to our liberal Demo mayor, Houston cops are now restricted in the way they can handle a car chase, and just have to follow respectfully instead of Pitting the idiot, and these long and dreary chases make the Houston cops appear incompetent -- which they are not -- but are just held to the liberal-mentality rules. I've talked with a couple of Houston LEOs and they whole force is grinding its teeth over the new touchy-feely rules.

Not so the Texas Highway Patrol. As soon as this chase went outside the city limits, the Staties took over the pursuit and a big Statie cruiser pulled behind the speeding van. The chase was over in about two minutes. The cop simply leaned out while driving 95mph and blew out the guy's rear tire, sending a message: Do NOT run from Texas Highway Patrol. Haw.
