Weird finding in the woods

CaliFFLCaliFFL Posts: 5,486 Senior Member
This morning I went out for a few hours to hunt and scout. I'm about a mile off the logging road checking out an area that has elk. I drop into what once was a swamp, but is more of a meadow now. Walking the edge of the meadow, I come across a collapsed Coleman tent. If I had to guess, I'd say it has been there for a couple years. There were lumps under the tent so my first thought is "Oh crap, there's a body in there!" I grab a stick and poke around a bit to make sure I'm not about to engage a **** or skunk. I unzip the tent and find the camping gear. Moldy chewed sleeping bag with mouse nests, lantern, mouse chewed paperback, intact gallon water container, beef jerky bag, and some beer cans. I can't think of a reason why someone would abandon their entire camp unless they were dead.

On a side note, should I call the sheriff?

Yes, it could be nothing, or someone missing for a long time. Any I.D. found?

I just took a look, I didn't dig around. Tell you the truth, I was a bit creeped out.

It's odd enough to warrant calling the law, IMHO.

Yep, let them sort it out.

Might be nothing or it might be a piece to a puzzle.
    That's all I got.

I'd definitely make the call. It could be anything. Guy got lost, happens all the time, and either got rescued or stumbled onto a road and got out that way and said screw his gear. On the other hand, around here it's not uncommon to have bleached bones, "found by hunters".
If you call in the morning you'll probably be stuck most of the day. But I think you have to call.
One thing I'll advise though is don't let your truck get blocked in by sheriffs cars or whatever. I found a dead guy once and once I was blocked in by coroners, etc. I was there for the duration.

I called the sheriff's office. They weren't too concerned, but they want me to show them the place within the next few days.

Having just finished a few of Ann Rule's books over the past year, I'd say....yeah, making the call was a good call.

Had a very similar experience some years back while hiking in the Bitterroot Wilderness in Montana. We had quite literally climbed up a creek bed that flowed down the mountain side to see what the source was on top. Found a beautiful lake that on one side had lush green foliage and the other seemed the mountain came right out of the water. Walking around through the foliage side we discovered a camp very much like you found. Camp goods strewn all around, unopened cans and bottles, dishes and other what not. Tent on the ground ripped to shreds, with two distinct lumps in the middle. As you did we lifted the tent and prodded the lumps (sleeping bags ) and discovered no bodies thank God. We recorded map coordinates and gave them to the ranger station when we got back to civilization. They had no reports of lost souls so assumed whoever had been there likely had been run off by a bear or came back to discover the mess and beat feet out of Dodge.

...early heavy snows have encouraged a lot of people to abandon their camps & get out in that country...

Yeah, fun isn't it, some act like you lured them out there to harm them.

Went out yesterday with a sheriff's deputy and a NFS guy. Found the tent and let them take some pics and dig around. After maybe 15 minutes the cop said he didn't think it was a crime scene, so he marked it on his GPS and we left. It had started raining so I think he just wanted out ofthe woods.

    Pretty uneventful.

That is good, break out the metal detector and give the area a good once over.
