Why is the Midwest considered that still when it's in the central time zone? Where does the midwest end and the west begin....the Mississippi river?

Because it's composed of states bought in the Louisiana Purchase, maybe? Name probably originates before we knew just how big the West really was.

Because in the early early days of America, Everything east of the Appalachians was the west. When the The US start the great annexation in hopes of going coast to coast, What was the west was now in the middle of the known east and the new Wild west. So...to make the distinction, the old west became the midwest and the new west was just the west...
The west starts about in west texas and extends up through Colorado, Wyoming, Montana...
    According to my edumacation....

Take this with a grain of salt guys.......I'm just irked that the United States hasn't evolved to amend the designation since we're so happy to rewrite history in politically correct views.........like when the indians became native americans and black people became afro-americans....

I hate the term Midwest. If you look at a US map, midwest is Arizona, New Mexico, etc. And "Midwest" states according to the press often include Ohio, etc. which isn't remotely western.

The term of course was used many years ago and it's stuck, but it's invalid. I always say "central states".

Would you prefer to call it the "Not quite so Easterly East"?

I draw the line at the states with their Western borders at about 100 degrees W longitude: the Dakotas, Nebraska, Kansas, and Oklahoma back to Ohio is the "Midwest"; anything from Pennsylvania to the coast is "The East"; the Civil War boundaries save Texas denotes "The South"; and Texas is big enough to be confused.

I would say anything east of the Rockies and west of the Mississippi should be the mid-west. On the other side of the hills, you are west.

They can be central since that's their time zone. Would be too hard for meteorologist to say "just to the right of the middle".

Indians........errr Native Americans don't seem to care either way.......it's I'm Choctaw, or I'm Sioux, or I'm Navajo, better yet, I'm 1/16 Cherokee......sorry chief, maybe you can tell the difference, but I can't......I just know that you don't look like the Washington Redskins I saw last week.

And I've had many a coworker say "I ain't no afro-American........never been to Africa and don't want to..........and do you see me sporting an afro?. I'm an American and I'm black!"

And to quote one of my wife's aunts, (granted she was a little "touched" as y'all say in the South) " I'm not a ing Native American, damnit! I'm a **** and proud of it!"
Yep. Saying "Native-American" only labels yourself as PC. The term "African-American" is absolutely ignorant and I refuse to use it. It assumes entirely too much about a person's heritage and paints every black person with an American brush. Black people can be Englishmen, Cuban, Haitian, Brazilian, etc. It would be like calling every pasty white person in this country "English-American". I dare you to say that to a proud Scotsman's face! How about going to Africa and start calling all the black folks there "African-American"? I am sure it will go over terrific.

I saw a TV show called 'How The States Were Formed/Got Their Shapes' or similar and it was very interesting. The LA Purchase, Railroad, Surveying and CA Gold pushed borders in funny directions. Some for simplicity, greed and bickering in Congress .....imagine that!

Addressing the lower 48 only, and with tongue in cheek. The only western states are Washington, Oregon and Californica. All the rest are "back east". Slant may well be the most westerly one of us. And if he wants to drive over to Point Blanco, EVERYONE else will be back east.

Realistically, I always feel better defining the "West" by life styles. TX, OK, CO, WY, MT and all the ones west of them feel "western" to me. However, the Flint Hills of Kansas feel western and eastern Colorado does not. So, now what?

Ohio is in a funky place. We're not northerners, like MI, MN, WI.
We sure as heck aren't easterners. Or Yankees, as many southerners would have you believe.
We're about half southern, half western. At least the bottom half of Ohio is. Cleveland is pretty eastern.
    Midwest-south?

The reason a lot of Southerners think Ohioans are Yankees is because the blue-hairs from Cleveland come to our fair land and tell us how much better, cheaper, and better-run things are "up North in Ohio." That's why most Southerners don't realize how truly red Ohioans can be. We get your old and crotchety ones, not the younger ones.

Well we started to tell y'all to go sack yerselves in 1776.......but since we're a bunch of lazy Colonists.....all in good time.....bless your heart.........it took us a few years to get our dander up and finally show you we really meant it. We were kinda understaffed and ill equipped at the time.

We changed the British stigmatism for you and took it off your shoulders........Now you're either American.......or you hate Americans.......:tooth: You can thank us by buying a Big Mac for 10 pds British.......in the end, WE GOT YOU to be fat b-stards!! Hahahahahaa!

We gave you the starting line for the time zones for history's sake.........whatever you start, we finish it for you.......Bawhaahahaha!

In all fairness......you did give us the English Language......of which we've corrupted completely and made it harder to comprehend than Vietnamese Tonal Inflections.

This is the land of BASF..........we don't make it, we just make it better.........:rotflmao:

Almost forgot.........we created the Metric System which you use, and we don't since we still love our cousins from across the pond and prefer the English "Standard" system..........again.......Bwahahahaha!

Oh, and we can purchase petrol in Gallons for the same price you pay in a Liter........snicker!

That makes sense. Cleveland might as well be a suburb of New York. Youngstown, too. Completely different people, vibe there vs. the rest of the state. Lots of people forget that Appalachia starts in SE Ohio.
