Don't forget the first rule of buying a rifle or any gun for your wife. The secret is to buy one that you like and then "give" it to her. She might ooh and ahh when you give it to her, but she'll really not be too blown away. Put it in your gun safe and shoot it and let her too. That way you both win. When you buy a new car let her choose the color. She'll like that.

Every now and then a girl comes along who really enjoys guns, but they are a rare beast and to be appreciated when found.

Oh, concerning your original question, search out an old Savage 99 in .243. Great small accurate rifle and a good size for a women.

Currently leaning towards either a Tikka T3 Lite or a Weatherby Vanguard GH2.

Thoughts? Anything else in this price range (~$600ish) I should be considering?

After reading reviews, it sounds like the Tikka might be more likely to be the more accurate of the two...?

Look at a Model 7 Remington. It's a light sweet shooting mountain rifle, and the kick wont be bad at all

You don't understand... I have to get her something, so I can have my Marlin 1894P back. LOL

She got her first deer this last weekend using said Marlin and has deer hunting fever in a bad way now. :-)

I would go with Teach and if you want something a bit more fancy Wambli. Other than my Mausers, I try to buy American if I can get quality in the ball park and both the Marlin AND ANY Remington will give you that.

The .243 Tikka T3 Lite Stainless is a perfect rig if you need to hike in and around with it. That was my exact choice for mule deer last year. It shoots groups with my handloads sub-.5 MOA and dropped my buck at 263 yards. I was practiced and confident in it out to 400 yards. I didn't push beyond that distance mostly because I ran out of time before the hunt to do so, but the gun did its part on that hunt and carried like a dream.

However, as others have pointed out, if you don't need to hike the rifle around, a heavier plaform that shoots equally well will tame recoil better and be easier to steady. The Vanguards are great shooting guns and if the fit is right and the carrying part of the equation is not applicable, that might be her choice.
Accuracy: because white space between bullet holes drives me insane.
