Butt out ???

Just got a new Cabellas catalog, new item called a " butt out" you screw it 10" up the butt of your deer, elk, etc then pull the membrane out, tie it off and cut it off. Anyone see it or use it?? is this something we really need ? jay

    Considering the negative reviews I've seen on this thing, I wouldn't waste the space in my pack needed to carry it....

    Just use a sprinkler head tool.

    Got one in the pack that will hopefully get used this year.

    Having yet to kill/gut a deer, my logic behind the purchase went something like this:

    *I haven't dismantled a large animal before. Simplification is a good thing.

    *Murphy's law plainly states that I will shoot my deer at dusk, or right before a nasty weather front moves in. Again, simplification is good.

    There's a good chance I'll have one of my more experienced pals with me to get me through the finesse portions of the process, but if time is a factor, that orange piece of plastic is coming out. As they say, better to have and not need. . .

    ...I'd just as soon have a small (3.5-4"), sharp drop-point knife, cut the hide around the plumbing, cut the fat & connective tissue inside the pelvis, & pull the whole 9" thru, & roll out w/ the guts. Running your hand down the intestine before you pull will force most of the pellets out, & most of the urine out of the bladder. If you're required to leave evidence of sex attached, you can still remove the "plumbimg" by cutting the connective tissue, leaving the scrotum in place. pretty much amounts to "you shot it, you better figger on getting a little bloody takin care of it"...

    I never heard of such a thing. However, I never had heard of skinning my deer with the assistance of my truck either until I saw a guy do it on my lease about 21 years ago. First he hung the deer up with a rope around the deer's neck. Then he skinned it down past the front legs and then caped it down and tied a rope around a smooth rock under the hide. He tied the other end to the front bumper and backed up, pulling the hide off the deer slick as owl poo. That sold me, and I have done all my deer and hogs this way every since. So who am I to call this BUTT OUT Contraption a bad idea? Hell, I'll try anything once.

    LOL, ok let me qualify that statement. I did leave myself open a bit there. I will try any different method of cleaning game because it can be drudgery and especially when I kill something it's usually 6 o'clock at night and drizzling ice bye the time I get ready to clean it so I want to clean it as quickly and as trouble free as possible.

    I've used them on a few deer, they work pretty good. Also use my 4-wheeler to skin my deer the way snake284 says he uses his truck. We just have to call in the deer we harvest in Ky., and I can usually be sitting back in camp drinking a cold one with my deer quartered up and in the cooler about 90 minutes after I shoot it.

    Never needed one. Just cut around the anus with a long blade. Make sure you get up inside the pelvic girdle and when you pull out the internal organs, everything comes with them. Done.
