Yeah, "of'...
MOUNTAIN CITY, TN (WJHL/CNN) - An officer is out of a job after he allegedly shot at a squirrel inside a Dollar General store in late October.

According to reports, witnesses say it started in the toilet paper aisle when a squirrel made its way into the Dollar General.

According to the 911 log, a woman told a dispatcher there was a squirrel inside the store, and she was afraid customers were going to get bitten because they thought it was cute and were trying to catch it.

Dispatchers sent over Officer Jody Putnam, and according to the police report, he tried to call animal control but didn't get an answer.

That's when he took matters into his own hands. An employee's witness statement to police said Putnam "sprayed it with some Mace, thinking it would blind it to where we could catch it, but it ran back behind the shelves."

Another witness told police she started gagging from the Mace that was sprayed inside the store.

According to the documents, a Dollar General employee said they walked down the toilet paper aisle, and the squirrel started running toward them.

According to the police report, he shot at the squirrel but missed. The police report the squirrel took off again toward a female with a baby. According to the report, Putnam had his gun out when he approached the female with the child.

The squirrel then ran up to the buggy where the report says Putnam stepped on the squirrel's tail and knocked it out. That's when witnesses say employees covered the squirrel in a towel and took it out of the store.

Putnam was fired three days later. The Mountain City Police Department said no criminal charges are expected in this case.

Putnam has requested a hearing to clear his name.

Outside the obvious stupidity, no criminal charges?!?! If a CCW did this they'd be UNDER the jail.

When our governing officials dismiss due process as mere semantics, when they exercise powers they don’t have and ignore duties they actually bear, and when we let them get away with it, we have ceased to be our own rulers.

I was in that general area today- - - -just a little north in Pennington Gap Virginia. That's one of those places you don't go by accident- - - -gotta have a good reason to travel roads that snake up and down mountains that would give a Dall sheep a nosebleed!

Yeah, but the CCW-er would have been a civilian breaking the law, so punishment would then be necessary!

Seriously though, can you remember when folks didn't dial 911 for every freaking little thing that went wrong in their lives?? That whole scenario should have gone down like this: "Attention Dollar General shoppers; there is a squirrel loose in the store. Before attempting to pick up the cute and fuzzy animal, let us know so we can bring our smartphones over and post the various videos on youtube. Thank you for your cooperation."
