Out at the ranch for Christmas and man what an effort!
Been waiting on this week since deer season started, this is about the time the bucks rut in south Texas so I try to get out a few days before heading back home for family stuff on Christmas Eve and day. This year the wife gave me a hall pass to stay out for the whole week and said she would drive out to join me Christmas Eve so we could spend the holiday alone for a change. Wow, I must be livin right and god has smiled on me, well not so much!
Monday I started coming down with a bronchial infection so I went to the doctor for a steroid shot and some anti-biotics cause I'm still not going to pass up on this trip. Wednesday I was walking and some how stumbled ove something and felt a pop in my right calf which was followed by some severe pain. Looks like I tore a muscle in it so now I'm limping around, coughing and wheezing like an 80 year old TB patient.
Wife told me this morning I should stay home; my answer to that was; "Ha! I would rather die in the woods. Took me forever to set up camp and with some serious effort I climbed my crippled butt up into the blind cause I's gonna hunt! Live or die I'm out here for a week. Wish me luck fellers!

Make sure you stay in touch with someone when you are out just in case.... like you need me to tell you that.
Good luck!

Have a good time and be safe.
Played cat and mouse with a pig about 200 yards out, he didn't want to walk out in the open and when he did it was just for a second then back in the brush. I guess the two deer at the feeder were disrupting his meal. Just before dark I took a quick shot at him but I think I missed. I could just barely see his head; oh well it was just a pig.
Also saw some turkey but I just watched them eat, I don't care for them.

Hope game is moving this morning, the front will be moving in this afternoon. Forecast was for 50% chance of rain from about 02:00-07:00 but nothing here so I am still dry. Very quiet this morning with about 10 mph wind and 69 degrees. Going to get in The 20's and windy here in the next 36 hours, gotta love Texas!

Not really waiting, just getting daylight and already have 2 pigs down and have 2 young deer at the feeder to my left. I've fired 2 rounds and they never left the feeder, they must know they are safe.
Anyway; I'm hunting this week with the new FD308 topped with a Leupold Mark IV 8.5-25x50mm with the mil-dot reticle and the JP Sauer 202 Forest topped with a Leupold VX3 LR 6.5-20x40mm, both chambered in .308 and both shooting the same load of 165 grain Hornady SST's and 45.3 grains of Varget. This morning I am hunting with the Sauer.
Sidearm is an FNX9 loaded with 18 rounds of 124 grain hp ammo.
Typical shooting ranges are from 50-300 yards. Since I am out here by myself I have the choice of 3 blinds to hunt, all have 2-3 corn feeders and all are pretty much equally productive. Since I already took 2 deer this year I don't really need any more deer meat so I am mainly just varmint hunting. There is however one really big buck running around here that has been seen twice and missed one by one of my buddies so if he walks out he will hit the ground.

Are those swine good eating??
They are out here like flies, I hardly get in the blind without seeing a pig. We try to kill off as many as we can which makes for good practice but it doesn't seem to slow them down any.

Oh yes, a nice sow like that is awesome tasting but I don't need any more meat, freezer is full so I am just working at some eradication. I used to donate the extras we didn't want to a group foster home but the state put a stop to that saying they could not have any meat that was not USDA approved which is kind of stupid. The kids used to learn how to clean and process the pigs themselves which was a great learning experience for them.

That reminds me of the soup kitchen in Louisiana that had to throw away a bunch of donated venison because it wasn't from an approved slaughterhouse or some such nonsense. The "inspectors" told them they couldn't even give it back to the hunters that donated it. The soup kitchen first had to throw it all in a dumpster, then the inspectors had a second thought and made them open the packages and pour bleach on it all so that raccoons and other scavengers wouldn't eat it. :bang:
And I believe it was a homeless man that complained.
+1
Mark it up to a good upbringing from a devout hunting family. Hunting is in my blood, I feel more at home in the woods by myself than I do around any amount of people, kind of weird the sense of calm and peace I feel when I'm out here. Like you there are not a lot of us that really understand that!

What gun is that Tim??
It is a JP Sauer & Sohn 202 Forest chambered in .308 totally awesome shooting rifle. They are made in Germany and are fantastically built. One of the finest rifles I own. The mag is a 5 round single stack.
