Off duty cop in Chicago is getting gas and is approached by 3 assailants, one with a firearm. He drops the gas nozzle and fishes in his left pocket turning his right side away from the thugs- hiding his draw motion and shoots thug one in the head. Thug 2 and 3 get out of dodge and leave thug 1 to perish in the street. All this is on video on the Chicago Tribune news site. What would have happened if he wasn't armed?

I wonder if the muzzle flash from the bad guys gun would light the gas?

I've considered that gas station mugging scenario several times. I think I'd take my chances hosing the perp down with gas with my left hand while dropping out of the line of fire and drawing my CCW with my right. I don't know if he would be smart enough to figure out his muzzle flash would light him off, but I'll bet mine would!

Glad the LEO came out ahead on this one. IDK, in a place like Chicago, if he lit them on fire and they didn't die, he might get prosecuted for malicious wounding or some crap.

    Excessive force?

    Assault with a deadlier weapon?

    Reckless endangerment of by standers?

    DA up for re-election?

    Interesting question.

THIS. 99/100 times they would have encountered an unarmed civilian. This was the 1% time they picked the wrong person.

I take that back... I'm betting the odds were much less than 1/100. They have probably done this 500 times before with a different result.

No need for a double tap....head shot! He should have shot the other 2.

It may be a tad morbid, but I love going on youtube and searching "robber shot" or "robbery gone wrong" and watching these DB's get some lead injections.

If you wanna see some merciless robbery thwarting, google Brazilian police robbery shootings. It's amazing anyone even bothers to commit a crime down there!

When I pumped gas, the diesel delivery man told Me about a punk that tried to rob him as he delivered fuel, he grabbed a dispenser nozzle and hosed the guy down liberally with gasoline, it was not necessary to light the guy up as by that time he was on his knees begging for mercy, I know of other gas station attendants that have successfully used that trick.

Also, gasoline in the face is blinding and most people doused end up groveling and vomiting disabled from the fumes etc.. not much fight left in them after they inhale and swallow and get enough gasoline in their lungs and nose and eyes.
