  My wife isn't a "militant" one and she'd kick you square in the balls....although it's roots are in the Algonquin tongue...it's considered very derogatory among her people...especially when used by a white person....

  It wasn't meant to be derogatory toward your wife or her people. I don't know her or her tribes social mores and I didn't know your wife was Indian or that it would bother her or anyone else on here, for that matter.
  
  I guess from your post it depends on how it's used and who uses it. I was referring to the Indian woman who killed all those people and now I see now my choice of that word would upset those who are knowingest about Indian cultures. Obviously I'm not.

  I understand that BC...no harm, no foul....I actually posted in fun...probably should have used a smiley face or something. I often used the same terminology until I was schooled by my wife's grandmother (who was a tribal elder)...who figured if I was going to marry her grand-daughter, there was some things I ought to know.

  There are some things in Hispanic culture of a similar nature, and if an Anglo says them, it is different than if a Hispanic says them.

  If you want a bad reaction try flying to Hawaii and calling a local woman a tita. A friend of mine was told by some jokers that tita meant aunty and he called a woman that. The look alone he got nearly killed him.

  I guess nowadays, even positive ethnic compliments could be considered derogatory by some, under the new PC guidelines, when I was growing up, some of My fondest and happiest childhood memories were with My babysitter, a Japanese lady, I sure do miss her.
