Ruger mini-14

Today I spotted a Ruger Mini-14 .223 in SS/Synthetic, on sale for $599.00. Is that a deal or no deal? I don't own one, but always liked their look. Is an AR-15 .223 a better "Tool" for the money? If so why?

Depends! some are better than others. The older models (ranch rifles) easily
identified by the tapered barrel forward of the gas block can have major accuracy
problems @ 100 yards+ due to barrel harmonics. I have one, and have achieved some improvement by shortening the barrel to 16 inches and installing a brake.
Eventually I removed the scope due issues with ejecting cases hitting the scope.
It will never match the accuracy of even the cheapest AR. But, now that I own it,
with iron sights @ 50 yards its fun to shoot and I'll keep it.

I was just out shootin my Ruger Ranch in .223 a couple weeks ago. Not a hiccup on anything I fed it, very reliable.

A few years ago, OK about 10 in TX a friend has a range on his land and was helping me with the cheap scope I then had on it, a Simmons of some kind. He tightened this and that, and a focal adjustment and cut the X @ 100 measured yards on the first shot!

It can be fairly accurate until the barrel heats up and groups open up, but is plenty good fer what it was designed for. Not a target rifle and not an AR with all the options. I still like mine like it is for what it is. Fun to shoot and I plan on keeping it. I like the wood stock too, not beautiful, but not plastic or black either.

I wouldn't mind owning a Ruger Ranch Rifle in 7.62X39 Russian, that would be some kinda fun with more whomp than a .223 :guns::guns:

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying the RRR (Ruger Ranch Rifle/Mini) trumps the ARs in any form or fashion. Depends on what you want or like in my case, what I already own.

Like was said they are not super accurate. They are a handy length and weight. The Mini14 does not have an EBR profile if you worry about that kind of thing.
    $600 is an ok price.
I still want one, I would probably take it for that money.

Ruger is selling 20/30 round mags for them now. Aftermarkets have a hit n miss record and I only found one "Williams" (?) a ten rounder that worked reliably in my RRR.

BTW, the new models had some changes made?????????????

I own three. Very dependable and will keep right on up there with any AR. As for the mall ninja puppet who will sound off like a broken record about accuracy, don't listen ...these are the types who only shoot a few rounds on the last Sunday on the month and spend the rest playing Call of Duty. With a fairly decent shooter the Mini is more than capable of consistently hitting gorilla sized targets out to 300 yds with iron sights and factory ammo ...that is what this rifle is designed for ...it is not a "sniper rifle". In short I prefer my ARs and M1As but if I was to only be allowed to have a Mini in a real world situation I would be more than comfortable with it. Just be careful with some aftermarket mags, some are complete junk. I have had no problems with Pro-mags. My .02.

$599 isn't a bad price, but not great either. Around here Mini 14's go for $750 or so, and AR's start at $625. With numbers like that IMO the AR is a far superior choice. I'm pretty surprised they even sell the Mini 14 and Mini 30 anymore.

My Mini 14 hasn't been shot in several years. If I want to shoot .223 then it's out of an AR. My Mini never was an accurate rifle so it isn't really all that useful to me. Mine is NOT the ranch rifle, so mounting a scope on it is a major pain. Not so with a flat top AR.

They have some AR's that I can get for around the same price, or a bit less. One is a Winham Weaponry in .223. looks like it has a diamondhead forend . I didn't get a chance to get a hands on look. What are they usually going for?

Thanks for all the feedback and advice guys, I was looking at a Mossy patrol rifle & a Ruger American both in .223. But with this sale, I may just buy another AR. I have a DPMS LR-308. and it's OK. I need a .223 however, I can reload for it. .22 LR & .22 Magnums are getting up there in price. I'd just have to buy the dies for the .223, no big deal there.
