A little range frustration today

timctimc Posts: 6,684 Senior Member
Had a buddy call me and asked me to bring some of my small carry style guns to the range for his wife to try. She is looking for a nice concealed carry gun so I was happy to oblige. I took an assortment of handguns along with plenty of ammo for her to empty, here were her choices
Taurus model 85 .38 special
Rossi .357 .357 mag
Kahr CW45 .45acp
Kahr MK9 Elite 03 9mm
Ruger LCP .380
Walther PP .32
Makarov 9x18
Sig P-232 .380

She fell in love with the Sig P-232 and also shot very well with it. I think my buddy is going shopping for one now!

This was all good and fun but while I was out there I thought I would test fire the .300 Blackout since I built the new lower, installed the new gas block and installed the Midwest Industries hand guard. Here is where the frustration began, started getting a lot of light primer strikes, primers had a decent dent but not quite enough to set about 65% of them off. I did manage to get the scope back zeroed again and do know the most of the new stuff works well.

All is not lost, I had another hammer spring at the house so I installed it when I got home, test fired 2 rounds and all is now good but it was a little frustrating at the range.

I hate it when that happens.

I shot some more of that Blazer 124 gr alu cased 9mm today.
Now happy with it, though it shoots, just is shooting high as compared to other brands of the same load.
Tried it in a 1911 and today a Blackhawk.
I suppose it is just a bit slower than the other brands.
Don't want to change sight setting for a box and 14 rnds, a good 6 o'clock hold works.

Range day 2 - She is running 100% now with the new hammer spring. Had a gentleman and his grandson ask me about the rifle today. He said he was looking to get an Ar in .300 Blackout so he and his grandson could plink with it. I loaded up a mag and let his grandson shoot mine, talk about a big grin. I'm sure grandpa is on the hook now! Enabling is fun!

Here is a progress pic, almost done with her, just a few little items to go.

Sounds like you got it running right now. I really need to get one of those threaded 'barrel extensions'. But as slow as the paperwork is I might not be around to enjoy it when the paperwork clears the powers that be.
I refuse to answer that question on the grounds that I don't know the answer”

It can't get closer to happening until you send the paperwork in!

All that's left on the build is the Ambi safety levers, the sling mount back plate and then dura coating the back plate and castle nut in dark earth.

    timc -

Yeah that is annoying. I have wasted more than one range trip due to some gremlin showing up or, worse, forgetting to bring something critical along...like ammo.
Accuracy: because white space between bullet holes drives me insane.

What's really annoying is that it was a brand new hammer spring. I guess it does happen with new builds and it was no big deal, just frustrating.

I did try some subsonic loads today just so I can say I did. I am definitely going to stick with the full house loads and 110 grain bullets. I really didn't like the softball trajectory of the 220 grain subsonics and it wasn't all that much more quiet.

I'll post one more pic when she is completely finished next week, I am really happy how this rifle is turning out. My only problem is I think I am at the end of my AR road. I can't think of anything else I could put together, all of my short medium and long range needs are taken care of.
