Would you open carry a sidearm if it were legal?

samzheresamzhere Posts: 10,923 Senior Member
The thread in the Clubhouse section about the long gun open carry "parade of idiots" brought up a thought...

If it were legal where you live (carry permit or not), would you open carry a sidearm for self protection, such as in a non-stealth holster?

And assuming that where you were going was totally legal for you to open carry, of course. And yes I know that some states currently allow open carry of sidearms, so if you live there, your feedback would be especially good.

And I'm not talking about your being off in the deep woods hunting or whatever. I'm instead talking about everyday going here and there, maybe to the Kroger or Wal-Mart or at a restaurant with friends, normal routines.

I'm thinking that I would not, just because I don't want to bring unnecessary attention to myself, good or bad attention either way. I prefer to just be "Sam" and that's it, not "Sam wearing a Ruger".

    Stealth is your friend.

Having said this, I would prefer all forms of carry be legal in all places at all time, so as not to run a foul of the law by mistake.

It's legal to open carry with a CCW license in TN, but I don't, except around the yard and on the farm. In public places I carry concealed to prevent scaring the sheep and getting unwanted attention from the police. Anyway, IF I have to use that CCW, I would much rather the bad guy didn't know it was there until it was way too late.

We can open carry here in PA, however, I prefer concealed carry. Don't want the BGs to spot you first.

PS I do open carry around the homestead...let's folks driving by realize it's not a smart place to consider.

It's legal here with a firearms license, but the only person I know to open carry is a real . No, I would not. I think it draws negative attention to gun owners, makes other folks uneasy.
Concealed carry is for protection, open carry is for attention.

It's legal in Alabama for anyone who can own a gun. Up until last year, we were "may issue" and the sherrifs word was final so some people carried because they could not get a concealed permit. I suppose if I didn't have a permit I might sometimes open carry. Thing is, here as soon as you get in your car, it's considered concealed unless you put it in the trunk.

You don't see them that much anymore but once in a while. Nobody seems to bother them much.

It would be a rare, unicorn-type of situation that I would.

But I want it to be legal, Because reasons.

We don't have open carry here but if we did I wouldn't open carry. I do wish we had it though just in case some one were to spot my gun. They really harp on the concealed part here.

Tennessee's law was written with a lot of input from citizens, resulting in a very well-crafted piece of legislation that accounts for such circumstances as printing, accidental windblown shirt tail, etc. that could get a CCW carrier charged with "brandishing" elsewhere. Completely open carry is legal, just stupid in most circumstances here.

These activists in Texas have an agenda with a specific goal in mind, and their over the top shenanigans are the way they choose to highlight a law that seems to be archaic and/or poorly written in its current form. The NRA crybabies who have to take the beeyotch position to urinate need to grow a pair and quit giving the liberals ammo to shoot at all of us gun owners!

It's legal in Kansas, but whether I do or not all depends Sam....When I'm am working or out and about in the country, I often open carry a SA revolver - and if I go into town (population 750) for gas or the like, I don't bother disarming. If we're going into the city for shopping, doctors appointments etc, I carry concealed (a Ruger LCR in my back pocket most times)....in either case, there is a long gun in the truck....which I would never tote around "just because"...

Open carry is legal in MS, and I don't. I do plan on getting my CCW sometime, but until then, I'm firearm-less.

It is legal in PA, but I dont see the point.

Here is my logic on it.

I CC because I assume there is not a threat.
If I am going somewhere were I would open carry a handgun, I will assume that there is a threat otherwise I would be CC'ing. I do not believe in the intimidation factor.
If I am going somewhere that there is a threat, I am dang sure carrying something a lot more real than a handgun, AND a handgun, or better yet, not going.

    edit
That does not mean that if I am open carrying at a range or woods that I am going to necessarily take it off for a stop at the mini mart on the way home. Open carry as a day in day out thing, I just dont see the point.

No, I would not. Like most others here, I prefer to remain discrete.

I do as soon as I cross the RR tracks and would during our walks when I have a N frame out.
Technically I do on a bicycle since the holster shows some with a big gun.

I need to check with the police to make sure they would leave me alone on our round robin walks even though NC for the most part is
    an open carry state.

Everything is legal in Arizona. Thank God. No gun bans, no magazine capacity limits, no permit needed for open or concealed carry. No restrictions on what can be shipped. Here in Tucson, despite the hoplophobia of the far-left SanFran - style city government, we host a major gun show about every month or so, sometimes two.

That said, I reserve open carry strictly for the wilderness (we call it a 'desert'), up in the mountains, or around my own yard. Those handguns are generally heavy, all steel, large caliber revolvers, with longish barrels, often in full-flap military-style holsters, and unsuitable for convenient concealed carry. I never carry open in developed, urban, commercial environments. And I would no sooner take a long gun into a restaurant than I would a spare tire, a fire extinguisher, a drill press, an ironing board, a lawn mower, a vacuum cleaner, or a printer/copier. Some things are simply out of place, regardless of the legality of owning them.

From the comments here, I pretty much agree -- it's better for the bad guy to not know, and open carry (not in a small rural town or on the farm or out in the wild) but actually in, say, a city when going to a movie or whatever, probably causes more trouble than not, just for the "show" aspects.

And Teach, CHL law here mentions only "reasonable" concealment as you describe the Tenn law, so that the "gust of wind" reveal is okay.

Most everyone here does seem of a mind.

In Michigan there are no laws prohibiting open carry of long guns or handguns as long as you can otherwise legally own a weapon. I have a concealed pistol license, so I usually carry concealed, unless it's a windy day, or I reach for something with the wrong arm, or I'm riding my scooter or something like that.

I'm sure glad I don't live in a state where it's illegal to print, or to accidentally expose my weapon. I seem to be careless in that respect. I am working on it though. I'm a man, and I can change, I think*.

I was disappointed to read that at the NRA convention in Nashville next year, no guns allowed.

I think if you're going to, you'd best be the walking, talking poster-child for polite, responsible gun ownership when you do. Also, you should be exceedingly well locked on with your awareness and skills.

With open carry, you're showing two flags - the obvious "don't mess with me" flag, but also the "I'm a normal gas-pumping, grocery-buying citizen, just like you, but I take responsibility for my own safety and you have nothing to fear from me" flag. I'm not an "image" kind of guy, but image is part of the educate-the-sheep side of open carry. It ain't the place for scruffy beards, beer-breath, plumber's butt, piercings, and a lot of tattoos.

Also, you should be exceedingly well locked on with your awareness and skills, because while 999 times out of a thousand you're a deterrent, the thousandth time you may be inviting the stupid.

Got that covered, and yeah, I'm for it.

He who shall not be mentioned said that when he worked for the NRA they had, at one time, a "no guns on the property" policy. Then he pointed out who they were and what they advocated...

    It's a self preservation thing.

No guns in the convention means no wackjob liberals can get one inside and shoot it up.

Plus, its a NRA convention...why preach to the choir inside? We all know ya got guns. This is about gun rights, not showcasing your tricked out 1911's.

Not talking about open carry. No guns period. If you buy a gun, you can't even take it home, it has to be shipped.

Pistols are tightly controlled here, but if it were legal to carry openly, I probably would occasionally, mostly on my way to or from hunting.
I used to work in forestry by myself a lot of the time in very isolated areas and I have to say, I would have definitely openly carried, lots of problems with treaspassers, poachers and dope growers combined with long hours and having to get out and unlock heaps of padlocked gates in the dark, would have been handy.

Day to day in town, no, mostly not, when I was farming and we went to town in work clothes we'd just pull our belt knives out and walk round with empty sheathes, or we'd be bundled up enough that it didn't matter, don't think anyone really cared either way, probably would be the same with pistols eventually once people got used to it,
    Alas, all hypotheticals for me,
