Hunting Near Corpus Christi Texas
So I just got stationed in Corpus, only been here about a week. From what I understand, most of the hunting around here is private land. Any of you military folk or Texas natives know of any public land where I could go shoot some hogs or once the season rolls around go deer hunting?

Not much public land around here. There's tide lands, anything a natural tide covers, unless it's on certain ranches where the owners own the game wardens and are in bed with the big wheels in Austin.
One guy here was a Teacher and outdoors-man and known to be very ethical. He was hunting at a place called the Wind Mill, up the Lavaca River, which is covered when the tide comes in. It's only about two miles up the river from the bay. It fits the definition of tide lands to a tee, but the game wardens and judges in this area are bought off. He got busted there and fined. He took his case up the ladder and finally after about 5 or so years won. It cost him a lot more than his fine would have been but in that area at least it set precedence in that level of appeals court. But you got to watch the lower courts because many of the JPs are corrupt and know most people won't spend the time and money to fight it, so the same ol' crap keeps going on. So be careful of hunting tide lands.
What kind of hunting do you want to do? There's waterfowl, Deer, Hog, Quail, Dove, Rabbit, Javelina, you name it. But most of it's gonna be on private land. And some of the best hunting in this state is only an hour out of Corpus.

Sho nuff, US Navy. Used to be one at Beeville too but they shut it down and made a prison out of it.
There WAS one at Kingsville too, where the King Ranch is close to. But I'm not sure if it's still in operation or not. It was Kingsville Naval Air Station, same as Beeville. That's all within about 50 or so miles of each other.

My brother was stationed at a USAF base back in the '70s, in Laredo I think, he was there when they closed the base down. I guess in some strange way I had it in my head that they closed bases down there. Sigh...now I know how Big Chief feels about the used S&W revolver market.

Check your PMs. I left a note there.

Naval Air Station Kingsville is still in operation. It's purpose is US Navy flight school, and it also houses the Border Patrol and two Army Reserve units. I used to be stationed there before Flight School.
Check out Escondido Ranch, that's where a lot of my Soldiers hunt.

The upside of private land hunting is you know who is on the land with you.
