A little pre-season stalking practice courtesy of a local deer

I decided to engage in a pre-hunting season skill sharpening clinic when I spotted this young buck (still in full velvet on his antlers) in a park just up the street from my house. I saw him browsing, parked the truck up the block out of sight and used the edge cover to stalk up behind him. I stayed dead still, save for the camera hand. The whole experience served as a reminder that year to year, field to field, the rules don't change: if you can stay dead still and the wind is in your favor, they often have no idea what you are. I have seen other deer around here bolt immediately if you try to stop and check them out, so this isn't a case of a "tame deer" simply ignoring me. He knew that something was up as I slowly panned the camera, evidenced by his pauses and ear twitching, but he never spooked. The end result was a really close and cool encounter.

Did you give him the obligatory imaginary rifle/bow draw/hand gun stance? That looks like something I might have to try one evening.

Ya know, I should've tried to do a practice draw, especially since I knew for a fact that he couldn't see me the whole time he was covered up, but I was way focused on capturing the whole event above all else at that moment. It never even crossed my mind.

When I'm out hog hunting at night I often have deer walk right by me. If it's a full or near full moon, I may see as many as 10-15 deer that come within spitting distance. Now, if I can only get the hogs to cooperate like that.

Funny how that goes, eh? The game of pursuit never seems to cooperate during the hunt while the ones we're not after show up like gangbusters.

Are you hunting the hogs from a blind or on the ground?
