Wild situation near my house
I got a call at work yesterday from my wife. She said there was a bank robbery near our home and the robber had taken hostages. She couldn't pick up our son from school as it was in lock down and she said there were police helicopters circling the area around our house. The police were telling all residents in the area (a rather large area, not our immediate neighborhood) to stay indoors with their doors locked. She was understandable a little nervous. I made sure she retrieved a gun and checked the locks. I was able to leave work and come home early. The police eventually located the suspected and he was shot and killed. He wasn't far from us as the crow flies but far enough away that we weren't near the action. Anyway, this made me realize a couple of things. First my wife needs to be more comfortable and proficient with guns (she's open to this) and I need to keep a long gun more readily accessible. I have several hand guns readily accessible but my long guns are in the safe. These two issues will be resolved ASAP.

Convincing people of the existing need to protect / defend themselves and their loved ones, is not a job I want.
Yep, the other day I got it in my head that I hadn't seen her speed loader in a while and couldn't find it.This is for her night stand gun. So I mentioned it to her and she went upstairs and found it.She plopped in down on the table by my chair and said rather archly, "It was on YOUR side".
I said, "That may be but it's YOUR ammo to protect YOUR life. Therefore it's YOUR responsibility to keep up with it, not mine."
I think she got the message.
Not having kids around is a big plus for me and therefore I'm okay w. having loaded .45s nearby where I usually sit or lie down. Girlfriend isn't negative about this even tho she's not a pro-gun nut like I am, heh heh.
We've gone thru scenarios repeatedly but the main objective is to have whichever type of firearm you might need available quickly. If you're defending a large house or open property, long guns may be the better choice, rifle or shotgun. Closer situations, a handgun is likely all you'll need.
What makes the bottom line is that the gun is accessible and quick.
It seems to me they count on us to protect them, perhaps on some deep subconscious level and I'll die trying if I have to but I can't always be there. Besides a team is always better than one guy. I've also told her that if the poop did ever come down, I'll do better if I can trust her to do her part.
It's a mind set issue more than anything else.
Son that's somebody with nothing to do with his time but keep me in trouble with mom.
Yep...generally takes a run-in with Mr. Murphy to take care of that...
