...............cos the balloted hunting season for adults has finished and tomorrow is our TAKH day ( Take A Kid Hunting)

The day will start at 930am where we meet & greet the 19 kids and their guardians who were lucky enough to draw a ballot. This will be followed by talks on hunting, the Fallow herd in the forest, bushcraft, firearms safety ( I drew the short straw on that one). The kids will then sit a Firearms safety test and draw their blocks........get a 'goodies' bag with things like hunting knives, caps/jackets, compasses, packs etc thanks to our sponsors. A BBQ lunch will follow with venison steaks & sausages before we escort the kids ( accompanied by their guardians) into their blocks and give them some pointers on where to find the deer. Then its just a matter of waiting to give them a ride out ......hopefully with a deer.

While I enjoy the patrols I carry out during the season and get a buzz from helping adults................tomorrow is the best part of being involved with the hunting blocks and managing the herd. Helping kids get an opportunity to go hunting is about the best thing you can do in my view.

Will take pics and post them up tomorrow night if I get back early enough........
Still enjoying the trip of a lifetime and making the best of what I have.....

Sounds like a fun day will be had by all! Hope the kids do well and see some game, too.

That is fantastic! What an opportunity for the kids. When I was in highschool the boy scouts were taken on hunts on what is known as the Welder Ranch between Seadrift and Victoria. It has always been full of trophy bucks due to its limited access. In fact when they opened it up to the Boy Scouts in 1965 it had not been hunted in about 30 years. That was the Welder Families own private wildlife refuge. But the Parks and Wildlife advised them to start managing the place before the heard went down hill. So the scouts got to hunt it for a few years, that is until some of the stupid escorting adults started taking advantage and shooting animals themselves. All it took a couple of them getting discovered and the family shut it down to all outside groups for good. That was almost 50 years ago and to my knowledge nobody other than family has hunted it since. But I did have the privilege of getting to hunt it. I missed a nice 10 pointer one evening and the next evening I killed a not as nice 8 point. But I was thrilled as this was my first deer.

I'll leave out the part about what I used to kill that deer with, because you wouldn't believe it would actually kill a deer anyway. But I will say that was the year I bought my .270, hehehehe!

P.S.- just for your information, NO! It didn't bounce off, LOLOLOLOLOL!!!

Thats a great thing your doing with the kids. If I may relate a story,

One of my best days of hunting was when i took my stepgrandson hunting for the first time, his dad was not a hunter wanted to tag along but i said no, just me and the kid, it was really cold that season so we made a little shelter on the side of a cliff, started a fire to warm up, later on he lined up on a nice doe, one shot with a .243 and it was down, he got all bloody gutting it out, only wanted to do it all himself. He was the proudest 10 year old i ever seen.
