About 500 troops from the U.S. Army's 1st Infantry Division in Fort Riley, Kansas, will head to Iraq and other countries in the Middle East next month to help coordinate the campaign against the Islamic State, the Pentagon said Thursday.

More than 200 hundred of the soldiers will be based in Iraq at U.S. Joint Operations Centers (JOCs) in Baghdad and the Kurdish capital of Irbil, and the rest of the contingent will operate out of U.S. bases in the region under the U.S. Central Command, Rear Adm. John Kirby, the Pentagon press secretary, said at a Pentagon briefing.

This arcticle is puzzling. The reason the pentagon has given, just doen't make sense. Also, This is a huge first....For as long as I can remember it has always been an 18th ABN Corp unit out the door first or 7th ID...But 7th is defuct.

Another HAlf measure.

The sounds like a purely headquarters stand-up move and nothing more. 500 troops split over several FOBs can't do much more than get basic functions like armory, security checkpoints, airfield operations, chow hall, etc. stood up for a much bigger troop allocation that would be forthcoming.

That's what doesn't make sense. The guys on the ground now don't operate in that type of footprint. And they have the support/hq troops to provide what they need. And why send the big red. Thy haven't done a higher hq operation in a. Wry long time

I'm actually quite surprised they didn't send 7th ID. They exist purely as a division HQ and this sounds right up their alley.

More smoke and mirrors from an administration that tells lies and half-truths about everything. When their political decisions don't jive with reality, they use the good and loyal members of the military to take up the slack, and the blame, if it blows up in their face. Obama will throw anyone under the bus to cover up his ineptness in conducting foreign policy and commanding the military, and depend on a socialist press to keep the public in the dark about the reality of the situation. He will throw in some very good people with one hand tied behind their backs, some of whom will die trying to obey his impossible rules of engagement. Hopefully, when the shiite hits the fan, they will do what is necessary for their survival, in spite of his cowardly leadership.

Yeah we have had a presence in the region since 2012 when we were supposed to be out of Iraq.

I blame the withdrawal and loss of all progress on the Obama administration. To make it worse, I think he continued to leverage the Media to flame the Anti-war movement.

I blame the Bush administration for not defining a clear and concise campaign plan and leveraging the media to get the news out...FROM THE START! More than half of a COIN fight is Information Operations. We did not show the American people the good things that were happening in Iraq to keep the public invested in the fight. Look at the way we waged the information war for Desert Shield and then Desert Storm. completely different. When we left Desert Storm the American public was upset we didn't march clear to Baghdad.

Knowing the order of Battle and how different units operate, there is no common sense reason for 1st ID to be on the ground. None. Corps level Headquarters provide HQ level operations. in the start of the OIF, V Corp was the HQ providing the needed admin functions for all units south of the Berm...even for 3ID, a 18th ABN corp unit.

It should have been III Corp out of hood to cover this, or I Corp out of Lewis. It just doesn't make any sense for a Division to be on the ground...At all.

I called Branch, there are no slots for me at Riley. It is upsetting, I haven't heard from my property manager in months and I'm worried about my house on the Tigris.

Gen Dempsey said in a pentagon briefing yesterday his son serves in the 1st Division, but I dunno if he is in the DHQ element or not.

I was in the Big Red One back in the 70s (stationed on Fort Riley KS)......If you are gonna be one, might as well be a Big Red One as they say.
