Quick Pennsylvania Fox Hunt
I brought the family home for Thanksgiving to the Philly suburbs Wednesday night, had an amazing family dinner on Thursday and had a great date night with the wife Friday night. A neighbor friend from way back invited me to come help him, his son and his buddy rid his sister's property of a few red foxes. Her dogs were attacked on more than one occasion, saved only by the fact that her husband was there to chase them off. Her last words to us before we hit the field: "there's no valor in missing!" Roger that!
I was solo in a tree stand and the three of them hunkered under a large cedar tree about 50 yards away. It didn't take long. I don't think we were out there 5 minutes when the first dog came into a mix of predator hand calls from me and Mike's buddy, Tom. Mike's son smoked it at about 40 yards with a load of #5 lead shot.
Not 3 minutes later, I hit my Buck Gardner 2-fur hand call mixed in with a Primos Catnip hand call. Another fox came in almost immediately but hung up at about 100 yards. I waited about 30 seconds, hit the 2-fur again and the fox closed into about 70 yards. He took a Winchester 555 bulk pack .22 LR from my CZ-452 American in the center of his chest and dropped where he stood. Quick hunt - great results!

Accuracy: because white space between bullet holes drives me insane.

I'm strongly considering getting the one I shot done in a full-body pose. I have always wanted to get a furbearer mount done and a fox in full winter coat really is pretty. If it's too expensive to stomach, I may go with a tanned flatskin, but I really feel like I'd be wasting a really beautiful opportunity for a full-body.
Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.... now who's bringing the hot wings? :jester:
That way, when you are heading out hunting to a new place and your wife says 'Wear the Fox hat' you can chide her for swearing at you............
Good hunt by the way.
You crazy Kiwi :roll2:
Seriously though, a full-body mount walking on a diftwood habitat is extremely tempting.
Need to add a rabbit/pheasant/grouse/duck.

...that's a direct quote.
One other thing to note about using a .22 LR on furbearers. If you want to keep a pelt, I don't know if you do much better and still kill effectively. At closer range, maybe a .22 short might do just as well, but for a practically available rifle chambering, the .22 LR really did wonderfully little damage.
