One other little trick for instant ignition that is a proven thing: Don't put very much priming powder in the pan. Less than 1/4th full...just a little bit...and just before you pull the piece up to your shoulder to fire snap/twist your wrist to throw the powder over to the extreme right side in the pan. Don't ask me why because I don't know why, but with the priming powder all the way over to the right away from the vent, it will fire quicker.
Spot on advice...the why of it boils down to....with the powder over on the right side of the pan, the flash "jumps" to the touchhole...with powder piled up in the bottom of the pan and around the touchhole you have created, what amounts to a "powder train" which takes longer to get the job done....a very good example of "more not necessarily being better"...that whole SNAP...POOF...BOOM thing is indicative of someone using way too much priming powder...

Snake, You have been given a lot of advise, some of it conflicting, most of it good. I have been burning charcoal, (shooting muzzleloaders), for about 40 years, some caplock and some flintlock. As I understand, you want to have a flintlock some day, but are presently shooting a caplock. Not a problem, I have four, a .50, a .32 and two .44 caliber revolvers, along with a .54 GPR flintlock, and a 20ga SBS shotgun. I have found Pyrodex to be hard to ignite, and it burns dirty. Pyrodex "P" is a little easier to light, but I think both attract moisture, making them even harder to light. Tripple 7, (777) is easier to light but not nearly as easy as black powder You do not need or want musket caps, they won't help and they are hard to find if you forget yours. I would suggest using CCI magnum caps, especially if you insist on using synthetics. BTW, Pyrodex is full of nitrogen and makes good fertilizer, LOL. I use carburetor cleaner or brake cleaner to swab the bore, to remove all traces of oil. Also, the little red straw that comes with either product will just fit in a caplock nipple, and will blast all of the carbon out of it. If you have a smoking or pipe shop near you, pick up a package of pipe cleaners. The hobby section at Walmart usually has them in the craft section. They will be handy to clean out the flame channels, in both the nipple and breach area. Keep yer powder dry........Robin :deadhorse:

Snake- - - -Midway sells Ballistol! Leave those other moose juice products alone, and RUN- - -DO NOT WALK away from the WD-40! Never, ever, put a petroleum-based product into a smokepole! I swab the bore with a patch soaked in 90% rubbing alcohol between shots, and pop a cap on the empty barrel before pouring the powder in for the next load. That assures that the cap is clear for the next shot. I'll see if the local Wally World has a few of those 20 gauge wool bore mops and send you a few. They're probably going to go on sale as the hunting seasons close, anyway.
If you insist on using synthetic powder, Pyrodex P is about the easiest to light off. FFFg Goex black powder is the right way to go as far as I'm concerned. Try to find a "hot shot" nipple with a bigger flash hole, but stay far away from the musket caps- - - -they're just not necessary. I don't even use WD 40 on my regular firearms. Since you sent me that rifle I've never used anything but vegetable oil and now I'm using this Wonder lube which I suspect is akin to Ballistol. But the only reason I'm using it is because that's all the had here in Small Town USA. I am ordering some Ballistol when I get paid on the 28th.
Last night as I reported in another post, I cleaned it again because I shot it when I finished hunting yesterday, the last day of ML season here. It shot first time and no hesitation at all. I think that's because I cleaned it really well Friday and scrubbed the barrel out with the bronze brush and hot boiling water. Then I lubed it with the "Wonder Lube" Patches and swabbed it out a couple of times with clean white patches til it was pretty clean. Last night I wrapped the bronze brush with a clean patch and pumped hot water up into it. I had the brillian idea to add some Dawn Dish detergent to the boiling water and swapped it several times. Then i poured more Hot boiling clean water down it and swabbed it in between to get the rest of the residue and soap out. This time when I rinsed it the water coming out the nipple hole got really clean and the white patches I used to swab it at the end got cleaner too. So I think my barrel is as clean as when I got it. One thing though, I stuck it back in the safe barrel down incase there's any oil residue left. Then it will drain out instead of pooling in the chamber area as it did last year.

OK, so I'm guilty. I don't know why I never tried black powder. But i know why I like 777. It's easy, and if you can get it to go bang it has a lot of push on the ball, so to speak. I bought into the Pyrodex because it ignites better with the number 11 caps and I imagined it was probably easier to clean up. I know now that it couldn't be much easier because it's a bear to clean out and I don't think black powder could be any worse. OK, all this calls for a new thread. Stay tuned for more info in the new thread, "The benefits of substitute propellants over black powder, if any,"

I'm selling off most of my collection 'cause I ain't got nobody to leave it to who cares about flintlocks, and when I slip my cable my "high-end" pieces will end up in the pawn shop in less than a month! At 1/10th value or less!
