OK, this raises a question in my mind. Everyone agrees that free-floated barrels are more accurate, so aesthetics aside, what is the advantage of a Mannlicher stock like this?
“A gun is a tool, no better or no worse than any other tool: an axe, a shovel or anything. A gun is as good or as bad as the man using it. Remember that.”
This is one of the first rifles I built. It's a large ring 98 Mexican Mauser (VZ24). 18 1/2" Shaw barrel in 7MM-08. Stock blank was from Bishop, slightly fancy Black Walnut. Chapman M70 safety, '93 Mauser hinged trigger guard. 1.5X5 Leopold in Leopold mounts and rings. I put sights on it 'cause it's not right without them but useless to me other then aesthetics. I put on an Ebony fore end tip because I couldn't find a metal one I liked. I eventually figured out to make my own from solid round stock by drilling an off set hole close to the muzzle diameter and then fitting it by reaming the hole with a tapered reamer. It is glass bedded full length.
I also notice that old Mannlichers had a barrel band to hold the barrel to the stock. My front swivel stud is T&Ded into the barrel and holds everything solid. This was my Wisconsin woods rifle, that's why I went with the short barrel. Anything longer than 20" just doesn't look right in a full stock!!

30-06, 24in Douglas air gauge heavy sporter, FN 89 action, original 98 dual set triggers in a carlo walnut stock, with a Turner Saddlery sling. Scope is a 3x9x54 (yes I can see real early and real late) I keep thinking about changing it but cant find a real reason to.
It's boring, and your lack of creativity knows no bounds.

Aesthetics is all I can think of.
Daddy, what's an enabler?
Son that's somebody with nothing to do with his time but keep me in trouble with mom.

Still enjoying the trip of a lifetime and making the best of what I have.....
OK. I've always liked the look of the Mannlicher, but never knew if there was a practical difference.

That's a pretty rifle. Were they out of big scopes?
Yep. And little guns.
I keep thinking about a fixed 4, but it would be dwarfed by the rifle. It is a true 24 in bbl on a long action and the LOP is made for me, about a inch longer than std. Butt to crown is 44 5/8ths. Early on, it was my only scoped rifle and I have shot a lot of groundhogs and deer with it so why mess with what is working.

Protect the barrel. Now that barrels are cheap and wood expensive, just because they look good.

Beautiful collection Wizard...........'You Suck' just doesn't seem adequate enough..........
Thanks Alec. I am hopelessly in love with Mannlicher rifles. I can't tell you how sorry I am trading my Ruger stainless/walnut in 257 Bob. Just hope Zee gets the urge to get one after looking at some of the ones shown.

Varmint, I retract my statement of not liking long barrels, that one is the exception, very nice!
The objective size being the sole detractor for me asthetically

Thanks Big Al. The Steyr is one of my pride and joys.

Yeah, I have kind of fallen out of love with it. But I hate to replace that which works.
Hope this week I'll be adding a Zastava .22LR to the collection. Will post pics ASAP.
