About to embark on one of my Grail Guns. The MG47 beltfed!!!

HvyMaxHvyMax Posts: 1,933 Senior Member
I found someone on another site Sharpshooter5090 who designed a beltfed using an upside down AK front half with a modified BCG crossed with a MG1 pan and topcover. It uses a simple box receiver and modified AK fcg. With the parts I have laying around this will probably only cost about $100 to build. I will also be making a bumpfire stock for it for some real beltfed fun. I'll be starting on it in the next few weeks along with my matchlock blunderbus. Now to see if I can finish them and rebuild my Christmas forest in time for my Birthday Blastfest http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x197/SHARPSSHOOTER5090/002.jpg

Yeah I'm gathering the parts and evaluating a few mods since I have more equipment than was intended for this particular build. I'll be breaking down one of my screw built AK's to cannibalize for this(why I screw built them in the first place). I'm ordering the MG1 tray and topcover along with some links and a few nutsacks. I should be starting the mods in the next few days so stay tuned.

Yeah. It seems like all of my friends have beltfeds, Gatlings, Full Autos and cans. I guess I have always had other things like a family taking up my money so I can only indulge in things I can build cheap. After this I think the full sized Hotchkiss will finish my gun "Needs". Well that and a few cans and if a few lawsuits go the right way some full autos and rebuild my EBR as a bullpup and... Here's a link to the original. I have a few mods planned like a bumpfire setup and a red dot to start. You can see the upside down AK front The bolt needs trimmed to strip rounds from the belt instead of a mag and the carrier gets an extension to accommodate the M60 spring and the belt feed mechanism.

This should be very interesting. Pics of the whole process would be most appreciated!

From reading your description I thought it was going to look like some piece of crap bolt action AK, put together by a 5 year old Pakastani in a cave somewhere.

From the picture though, that actually looks pretty slick......looking forward to seeing the finished product.

    Inversion therapy. Nice!

I suppose you could do the same thing, but leave it mag-fed for a wee little baby BREN gun. . .

I thought the Japanese were the only only ones stupid enough to put a bayonet on a LMG......are you Japanese?

I was with you up until this sentence. Dude it is a machine gun (look alike) if you have to go to steel you are doing it all wrong.

Heck I put a bayonet on my 10-22 and Mac11. I might even put one on a BB gun. Guns are so much more "EVIL" with a bayonet!!! Guns are way cheaper to build than cars and motorcycles. Bayonets are kind of like curb feelers and spinners.

Some have actually done that mostly because they didn't want to chop a feed tray and mod the topcover. Crap I could have done that for free with what I have laying around just for something different . I am weighing many options now. Instead of the bolted on aluminum block bolt extension I am going to bend and weld one from 10-18ga metal I have laying around. That should allow me to delete the firing pin extension and move the FCG forward. That should also allow me to do a dual spring push setup instead of the M60 pull setup which necessitates all of the gas system mods. The extra room behind the FCG should also give me plenty of room to work up the bumpfire setup. I am considerind a sliding grip assembly with a see saw actuator which should still meet the definition of a bumpfire system and allow me to make it a bullpup. What is really funny is that with the available drums the AK is far handier for sustained fire without having to go through all of the effort of loading a belt but darn it I have always wanted a beltfed all my own!!!!

Yeah I might be able to afford to have a little fun with this anyway. I couldn't afford to feed my buddy's 1919. Looks like this will stay under $150 for me to build and have set up so how could I pass this up???

1 1/2 bends to a receiver! I'll plug weld the rails and then I can start on the FCG and gripstick. All that's left to find is a M60 return spring. Also working on an ammo can mount so I can have a 350 or so round belt instead of just the 50rnd nutsacks. There's a trick to bending such things on a brake I'll post pics and explain later this week.

Got the receiver bent and rails cut. Didn't need the trick (opposite bending in the middle like a W so I could get 90°s on the outside with a v in the middle to allow clearance and then flatten the center) he has a backcut die which allows such bends. Would be welding it all up today if my wife wasn't put on call today which is why I'm shopping instead of welding. Figured out the sliding grip setup so I can go full Rambo on bumpfire. I sure hope I have this ready for my Birthday Blastfest!!!

Got everything cut but welding will have to wait till Tuesday. I'm thinking a 5" SAWish buttstock would be nice with a M60ish forend. An AK carbine sized beltfed carbine!!! Next will be the FCG and sliding gripstick assembly for full Rambo action!!!

Gas piston goes on the bottom to allow top feeding. Made a little progress today. Rails welded, feed tray trimmed and adjusted, ejection port cut. This is moving along well. Next Will come the hinge and FCG. Then the gripstick assembly. I may cut the buttstock this week as well.

Finally back from a few years of 60-80 hour work weeks and now that I'm retired I'm back to playing with gun's. Now that my kids are older I'm also back to motorcycles and cars. I'll have to rethink the entire FCG now that bumpfire isn't an option.

Haven't even looked at it or much of any of my substantial projects for 5 or 6 years. I was working 80+hr weeks for 3 years then settled into 60hr weeks mostly out of town since then. I finally said FTW and retired. I'm just starting to get back to digging this out and redesigning the FCG because bump fire is a NO NO now. I'm also back to customizing bike and car projects now as well as catching up on things around the house. This will be getting done though. It's funny that I Googled MG47 and this is what came up!!! I've thrown together a few AR's since then as well. A 450 Bushmaster and a 350 legend with an FAL style adjustable gas piston. AR' only take an hour or 2 to throw together. Poly 80 Glocks even less.

That's right side up. I haven't removed the front sight yet. It will be flipped repinned and extended at some point. I'm just digging everything out after a few years.
