My goal next year is to add the following cartridges to my existing list.

    6.5-06 A-Square
    .357 Mag
    .445 Super Mag
    .45 Colt
and maybe a wildcat .44cal that some Jackass has designed.

If I can accomplish all those, it'll be a good year.
Whoa, wait, What?!?!?!? You have a .445 Super Mag?!?!?

Use that one FIRST!! Pleaseopleaseoplease!! I would love to see the results you get with that......

I am slightly interested in that chambering, as I still have another handgun coming to me this year and my available choices are changing while I struggle to make up my mind.

Got it last Christmas. Didn't really get it ready in time for much hunting last season. Don't worry.........it's high on the list.

I want to take a deer with my .357 Mag. Model 586 Smith & Wesson. I know that with its 8 3/8" barrel and long sight plane, out to 50 yards it's nearly an automatic deal. It's got excellent sights on it with a partridge front sight, slightly modified, and is deadly to 50 yards and maybe as far as 100. If I can manage to do my part, this dream will become a reality.

Sounds like a nice pistol Mike. I'd love to see a picture of it.
I killed a fat doe with my 19 years ago. A 4 incher. It wasn't a plan, she just stepped out, a target of opportunity. I can't swear on the bullet but in those days I feel certain it would have been a 158 grain JHP. But it was probably less than 50 yards. More likely less than 30.
But if the plan is out to 100. I'd get me a load for a heavy hardcast. And start it screaming.
    Just food for thought.

Here ya go Tracy, not the best picture but this is her.

This one has an 8 3/8" barrel.

I've had it for 32 years and it still looks great.

Some say it's a little clubby because of that barrel, but I don't mind it and it helps me steady it. I am NO HAND GUN SPECIALIST! But I can actually shoot this thing pretty good. This and my Springfield Armory 1911 45 ACP. But they both have good triggers and just happen to fit my hand.

Actually, I could be a fairly decent hand gun shooter, IF I'D PRACTICE! But shooting hand guns doesn't really turn my crank. I think of them as tools more than sporting arms and I just stay proficient enough to hit BG. And I can do that. But every once in a while there's a hand gun that tickles me a little more and this one was one of them.

For my first 30 years after the 8mm Mauser one I used 45 modern Minnies out of either my Kentucky rifle or pistol. The last few years I have added 12ga slugs to the mix.

Do you get to use modern rifle in MD? I'm from Delaware, and last I knew of the regs, you couldn't use rifles in any significant caliber there; only shotguns and BP.

I'm pretty boring compared to most of you.

    .270
    .30-06
    .300 Weatherby Mag.

Oh you're not as boring as you think. You can start a real POO Storm with that list.

I only killed one deer this year myself, and I used a gun I'd already blooded, my Yugo Mauser sporterized and re-barreled to .257 AI about three years back. I really love it for deer, and that was my third deer I've taken with it. The first year I had it I killed a doe at about 180 yards with it.

    IMG_0764_zps5a2569f3.jpg

Last year I killed another doe with it. I shot it going away from me at about 40 yards and I was trying to aim for the back of the neck. But it was moving and I was bobbing up and down trying to get on her I guess so I hit it in the Butt (where the spoon handle is).

    IMG_0812_zps0981b721.jpg
It bled out in the brush. I hit a main artery in her back upper leg.

Then the deer this year was a small nubber buck that I thought was a doe at about 150 yards moving from my left to my right across the Sendero. I hit it in the right front leg and into the vitals and she limped along out of sight behind another mott of trees and died out in the open. Where I hunt it's the perfect rifle. With Combined Technologies 115 grain Silver Ballistic Tips it's a death ray. It hurls the 115 grain at right at 3,000 FPS.

Yeah, I should have just made this a "deer sized game" or "medium game" thread to start with. So, add away!!!

Since taking the buck I shot last year with the 7mm08, all the deer I have shot since have been killed with the Howa 204. Last one was 2 weekends ago.

80metres, standing shot, bullet hit slightly right of centre of forehead and took the whole back of the head off. Most of its grey matter exploded out of its ears. Deer stood for about 4 seconds wobbling on its legs before it toppled over.

I am loving that 204. Oh, cartridge used was a Hornady factory 45gr sp. Groups at around .4 at 200m.
Still enjoying the trip of a lifetime and making the best of what I have.....

Well hell, what else you need? You can kill every deer on the planet with a .308. I have even killed a few with the cartridge, and everyody thinks I'm Mr. .270. I even at one time thought about getting me a very handy deer rifle in .308. In a Remington 760 pump gun. That with a good straight 4x scope would be sweet. I have a .308 in a Remington 700 ADL Synthetic, but I hunt a lot with what I think of as a European version of a .308, an 8x57 Mauser.

Some cartridges aren't fancy and may seem a bit boring, but they just make sense.
