"Without a reliable cost estimate, the Air Force does not have a complete picture of the savings it would generate by divesting the A-10 and does not have a reliable basis from which to develop and consider alternatives to achieve budget targets," the GAO said.

It seems that nobody is pulling the cart for the retirement argument on this one.

Nobody except the people who hold stock in the companies that have a contract related to the F-35...

Dear USAF, you aren't fooling anybody.

Yep. Them, and the senators whose states were pre-emptively pimping new manufacturing jobs for the F-35s various parts before knowing if the work would actually be needed.

A perfect platform to destroy many of those ISIS vehicles we gave the Iraqis who abandoned them and ran away and they commandeered.

Of course, we need a POTUS with some balls to go after Islamofacist first.

    I say keep it!

If the A-10 is done away with, then we need to put the B-61 back in full production and use in on large concentrations of terrorists. Best thing about the B-61 is that no burials would be necessary as only carbonized confetti would be left.

    Government Accountability is an oxymoron.

The A-10 works well and is less money why keep it? Close air support was its mission. A-10s were supposed to take out Russian tanks coming through the Fulda Gap in Germany if ground war should break out in Europe. It's kinda interesting that the job it did well in the Middle East was kill Russian built armor and missile launchers, and anything the GAU 8 cannon can reach. Heavily armored with stay on station ability and 16,000 pounds of armament make it a winner. The latest upgrades make it efficient so it needs to be retired. Hope the GAO can keep it alive. Take 'em all to Israel and let them hunt ISIS and anything with a black flag. Wart Hogs rule if we let 'em. :applause: Later,

Let the BUFF's (B-52) protect the Wart hogs in the oldest active air craft club!

Close air support at mach 2 is impossible. The A-1 Skyraider passed the torch to the A-10. Neither one is fast, but they are the right tools for the job in their respective time frames. The A-10 should not be retired until something else that can fly low, slow, and is more heavily armored with new lighter armor comes along. And can vaporize all that oppose it on the ground. The Navy doesn't have anything to really replace the A-6 and it's gone.

Geezz Mike, you can slow down for some, actually most, missions.

We do need the A-10 for it's gun.

The stubby wing mach capable jets don't handle so good at really slow speeds like the A-10 does. The old F-4 was a fine fighter, but watching one maneuver slow speed was painful.
The A-10 does have a fine gun, and the armor to take some hard knocks and not falter.
I'm just sayin' that in the big scheme of things, an aircraft capable of low and slow, with long loiter time can be exactly what is needed, and nothing else can do what it does equally, or nearly as well.
