Marlin Quality - Messed Up

Looking for a new (to me) Lever Action, I decided to take a look at a brand new Remlin at the new Bass Pro in my area. Literally, every rifle in the store is new. Although I heard the original Remlins were horrible, I had heard they had improved.
Although I didn't function test it (why bother?), I wouldn't be optimistic. The fit and finish of the $670 version I inspected would make a Chinese counterfeit goods factory cringe.
This rifle was inspected by Mr Magoo.

Words of wisdom from Big Chief: Flush twice, it's a long way to the Mess Hall
I'd rather have my sister work in a whorehouse than own another Taurus!
Remington bought Marlin, fired all the people who knew how to build lever action rifles, closed the factory, and started up production in their own factory in NY.
Put a rifle in his hand and that's me.
Here in the People's Republic, Gun Shows are basically illegal. So far, I have seen 0.0 nice .45-70's at Cabela's or the LGS.
Since I am not in a hurry, I am unlikely to make a panic buy. Just Window Shopping at the new store.

I make the Bakersfield shows whenever I can (Kern county) California.
Thanks, but I am in one of the East Coast versions of the People's Republic.
Even cheaper on some Internet sites... 336W I think.

I will fear no evil: For I carry a .308 and not a .270
I have my heart set on a nice .45-70. Plus, I don't think Walmart sells guns in this state.
Until I find one I like, I'll probably use a Slug gun (longer season).

After reading your post yesterday I decided to go to Wally World this morning to check out the Remlin 30/30 lever that I saw there earlier. You're right Uncle Fester. That thing looked like the wood was fit to it by a monkey having a seizure. Horrible wood to metal fit. Tool marks on the metal, splotchy or uneven bluing. Quality control must have had their hours cut.
No pride in their product, that's for sure. In it's defense though, it looks better than the "Tactical" version of the lever action. That was the ugliest rifle I ever laid eyes on.
