Reason most folks won't participate or even talk about it is they are scared they will offend the Islamic's and be attacked or be accused of being Islamophobic, but some of the same will not hesitate to depict Jesus in very disgusting ways and call it "Art" and their right under the freedom of speech.
Asking for trouble....well depends on how you look at it. They don't play with others well.
We shouldn't be intimidated or allow it in America, but often give them a pass for being hostile over what should be nothing to get upset about.
Possibly distasteful and rude to partake in the event, but those who choose have every right to and well...........screw'm if they can't take a joke.
Some of the artist/writers are still in hiding after many years of being put on a hit list, so there is the reality of the possible consequences of offending Islamic fanatics to take into consideration.
Don't poke a wasps nest with a stick unless you are prepared to destroy it and ready to get stung, is another way to look at it.

There are PLENTY of problems with 'the religion of peace', but painting all of Islam with the same tarry brush we use for jihadists is stupid.

If you do, just don't give addresses or phone numbers and consider your phone may be tapped. Take all extra measures to conceal your true identity. And surely don't do anything outside where whatever you do can be seen from space by a satellite with one of those super cameras. These guys may have just recently gotten off the camel but they have a rather uncanny ability to catch up on technology. And they do seem to be into that revenge thingi. So always keep in mind someone may be watching...

Meanwhile, most of the world's other religions have reformed, and no longer convert by force. Knowing that, wouldn't it be easier to just kill the terrorists, and let the rest of them try to reform their own religion? No civilized nation has the stomach to execute 1.5 billion Muslims, scattered all over the world, and I would worry about them, if they did.
